This includes ensuring the safe and efficient testing, processing, storage, and distribution of blood products. Medical Technologist/Technicians and lab assistants (phlebotomists) Physical Requirements The ability to perform the duties and responsibility of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations for disabilities. The ability to consistently lift, push or pull loads of up to fifty (50) pounds. (Unless nursing 50) Sufficient strength, mobility and stamina to make frequent location and position changes, assist with patient care, and perform other physical activities of average difficulty. Performance:
Position Specific Essential Functions Supervise and coordinate the activities of medical technologists, technicians, and laboratory assistants in the blood bank. Oversee the testing of blood for ABO blood group, Rh factor, antibodies and infectious diseases. Ensure blood products are properly labeled, stored, and maintained in compliance with regulatory standards. Manage blood inventory levels and ensure proper rotation of blood products. Collaborate with physicians and medical staff to ensure timely and accurate blood product availability. Implement and monitor quality control programs to ensure compliance with FDA, CAP, and other regulatory standards. Maintain accurate documentation of all blood product testing, processing, and distribution. Ensure all staff follow infection control and safety protocols in blood collection, handling, and storage. Assist with the development and implementation of training programs for laboratory staff. Perform periodic audits and prepare for regulatory inspections. Strong leadership and supervisory skills to manage and mentor laboratory staff. In-depth knowledge of blood bank operations, transfusion medicine, and laboratory testing procedures. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in ensuring accurate blood product testing and record-keeping. Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond to urgent medical situations. Strong communication skills to interact with medical staff, patients, and laboratory personnel. Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education Required High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field.
Experience:
Required Three years of experience in a blood bank or clinical laboratory setting One or more years of leadership experience Knowledge of FDA, AABB, and CLIA regulations and standards
Certification/Licensure:
Required Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or an equivalent accrediting body Preferred Certification in Blood Banking (BB or SBB)
