Job Summary:
Our Lady of the Lake University is seeking a highly qualified, detail-oriented Science Lab Manager to oversee all instructional and research laboratory operations in Biology and Environmental Science & Sustainability (ESS). The Science Lab Manager ensures that all science laboratories operate safely, efficiently, and effectively in support of faculty, students, and overall programmatic needs. This role provides direct oversight of Biology and ESS laboratories while supervising the Chemistry Lab Technician and Maker Space Coordinator. Additionally, the Science Lab Manager oversees purchasing and inventory management for Biology, ESS, Chemistry, Physics, and the Maker Space to ensure adequate supplies, equipment maintenance, and regulatory compliance. This position is a 10 month (August to May) position.Performance Evaluation Metrics:
1. Laboratory Operations Maintains operational readiness of instructional and research laboratories. Ensures equipment functionality and continuity of lab operations. 2. Supervision & Coordination Effective supervisors assigned staff and student workers. Ensures timely completion of assigned tasks and responsibilities. 3. Inventory & Budget Oversight Maintains accurate inventory and appropriate supply levels. Manages purchasing and budget responsibilities responsibly and on time. 4. Faculty & Student Support Provides responsive and effective support for instructional and research needs. 5. Safety & Compliance Maintains compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety regulations. Ensure proper documentation and inspection practices. 6. Professional Effectiveness Demonstrates technical competence and leadership. Engages in ongoing professional development and continuous improvement.Essential Functions:
1.Biology & ESS Laboratory Operations (Direct Oversight) Supervise biology and ESS work-study students and provide direction on daily laboratory tasks. Prepare general chemical solutions, media, and laboratory materials for use in instructional labs. Care for living organisms used in laboratory activities, including bacteria, fungi, invertebrates, and live plants. Assist and mentor students engaged in independent research projects and course-based research involving living organisms. Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation such as UV-Visible spectrophotometers, microscopes, analytical balances, PCR machines, autoclaves, centrifuges, and other equipment essential to teaching and research. Maintain laboratory safety stations, ensure compliance with departmental safety protocols, and educate students in proper laboratory safety practices and good laboratory techniques. Inventory and order supplies, chemicals, equipment, and materials needed for biology and ESS teaching labs and research activities. Collaborate closely with Biology and ESS faculty on the preparation, design, improvement, and execution of laboratory activities and course materials. Manage the biology laboratory supply budget and track expenditures for ESS labs, providing regular updates to the Program Head. 2. Supervision & Cross-Disciplinary Coordination Supervise the Chemistry Lab Technician and Maker Space Coordinator, providing guidance, scheduling, task oversight, and performance feedback. Coordinate shared laboratory resources and workflows across biology, ESS, chemistry, physics, and makerspace. 3. Purchasing & Inventory Management (Across All Science Areas) Oversee purchasing, receiving, and inventory tracking for biology, ESS, chemistry, physics, and makerspace needs. Ensure timely acquisition of chemicals, consumables, small equipment, and instructional materials for all science disciplines. 4. Safety, Compliance & Facilities Management Ensure compliance with university, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations for biology and ESS labs. Assist with maintaining accurate documentation related to chemical inventories, safety data sheets, hazardous waste disposal, and equipment maintenance for biology and ESS labs. Support adherence to best practices in biosafety, chemical safety, and general laboratory operations.Additional Responsibilities:

Education and Experience:
Required Bachelor's degree in biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. Experience working in laboratory settings involving living organisms, chemical preparation, and scientific instrumentation. Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to supervise students or staff and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously. Preferred Master's degree in biological or environmental science discipline. Experience in academic laboratory management or research support roles. Familiarity with makerspace operations, inventory systems, or chemical safety programs.Additional Information:
