(BA-IUHC-IUBLA) Department Information The Office of Student Life is focused on building a strong foundation to ensure every student's Indiana University (IU) experience is positive, safe, healthy, and meaningful. Job Summary This position performs a variety of clinical laboratory diagnostic tests in multiple disciplines to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the Indiana University Student Health Center (IUHC). Key responsibilities cover a variety of general laboratory operations including technical and diagnostic equipment operation, utilization of software programs, quality control testing, patient specimen collection, and promotion of quality improvement in the laboratory. Department Specific Responsibilities Meets Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements of the role pertaining to education, training, proficiency testing, and undergo annual technical competency assessments. Delivers high-quality patient care through professionalism, collaboration, skill, and effective teamwork are essential elements to this position. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots diagnostic instruments to perform testing in the areas of microbiology, hematology, chemistry, serology, molecular, and urinalysis. Operates technical equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, automated and manual pipets, timers, and other items essential to a variety of laboratory tasks. Utilizes computer software systems (Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) to order tests, facilitates specimen collection, reports results to providers, and other related functions to support laboratory operations. Processes and packages patient specimens for shipping. Monitors and keeps laboratory supplies at sufficient levels to sustain patient testing needs. Completes reagent/equipment performance validations as required. Performs and Evaluates Quality Controls (QC). Evaluates quality control results, reports, and statistical data for issues and trends taking corrective action(s), if needed. Prints monthly QC and Maintenance reports for laboratory manager's final review. Submits monthly QC data to interlaboratory reporting entities. Coordinates and/or performs Proficiency Testing (PT) analyses. Promotes High-Quality Patient Care Responds quickly to visual / audible alarms multitasking as necessary during heavy workload periods striving to meet expected turnaround times. Demonstrates positive customer service skills to greet patients presenting to the laboratory for specimen collection(s). Maintains professionalism through a variety of patient and coworker interactions. Performs phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures on patients. Abides by safety guidelines to protect self and patients from exposure to chemical hazards and biohazards by wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and performing hand hygiene frequently. Assists with care of patients during episodes of fainting or other acute reactions stemming from specimen collection. Completes training and maintain certification in BLS (Basic Life Support). Promotes Laboratory Quality Improvement. Participates in meetings and activities geared to improve patient care, fulfill organizational strategic goals, and facilitate staff engagement efforts. Collaborates with the laboratory manager to prepare for bi-annual COLA accreditation inspections. Completes annual competency assessment as required byCLIA/COLA.
Maintains ASCP, or equivalent, certification status. Retains technical knowledge and acquire new knowledge through Continuing Education accepted by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). General Responsibilities Acts as lead technologist, overseeing laboratory activities. Demonstrates, mentors, provides technical guidance and expertise, and acts as a resource to other staff pertaining to testing performed. Resolves testing technical problems and takes remedial action whenever tests deviate from laboratory procedure. Performs advanced quality control analysis, review, and troubleshooting. Performs, documents, and troubleshoots advanced maintenance and repairs to ensure optimal performance of instrumentation. Creates and updates procedures of the laboratory according to accreditation requirements. Trains new employees and performs competency assessments. Coordinates and oversees laboratory supply ordering and maintains inventory (e.g. disposes of expired reagents). Assists in preparation for accreditation inspections. Maintains technical knowledge and acquire new knowledge through continuing education. Performs phlebotomy, specimen collection, and clerical duties as needed. Qualifications Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Ability to influence internal and/or external constituents. Working Conditions / Demands The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. Advertised Salary $66,000.00 on an annualized basis.
