Posting Details Interviews are anticipated within two weeks of closing date. The New Mexico Scientific Laboratory operates within the Public Health Division of the New Mexico Department of Health. The Virology/Serology section is one of four sections within the Biological Sciences Bureau of the laboratory that supports various public health testing for the state of New Mexico. Why does the job exist? The Section Line Supervisor oversees daily activities within the Virology/Serology testing section, specifically our Rabies team that serves the state supported agencies. This includes ensuring that the testing deadlines are met, testing schedules are maintained uninterrupted, test results are accurate, personnel are supervised and competency trained and that the section maintains CAP (College of American Pathologists) certification while adhering to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Scientific Laboratory (SL) and Department of Health (DOH) policies. Perform moderate to high-complexity infectious disease clinical laboratory testing on animal and human biological specimens via automated clinical machines and/or manual bench procedures. In addition, the laboratory Line Supervisor completes and maintains all necessary quality assurance, quality control and specimen reporting requirements as required by our regulatory agency. How does it get done? Primary responsibility includes leading the Rabies testing team while performing bench-level testing and method development activities as needed. The position is responsible for maintaining an effective and balanced workload among section employees and ensuring that testing activities meet established sample throughput and turnaround-time requirements. the position requires willingness to receive rabies pre-exposure vaccination and perform rabies diagnostic testing. Supervise at least two employees to ensure efficient workflow, accurate testing and timely completion of assigned samples. Work closely with the section manager to prioritize workload, address operational needs, and ensure all testing is completed. Perform, support, and assist with the development, optimization, validation, and implementation of laboratory methods related to rabies diagnostics and other applicable testing procedures. Perform rabies testing and assist with the examination and processing of domestic and wildlife specimens, including the safe use of necropsy instruments and equipment for specimen collection, preparation, and diagnostic testing. Apply appropriate laboratory techniques and biosafety practices when handling potentially rabies positive animals and diagnostic specimens. Communicate and provide analytical results to external partners and stakeholders when needed. Interpret, document and report analytical test results accurately in accordance with established Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs), quality assurance requirements and applicable laboratory standards. Assist with the review, revision, and development of SOPs, test methods, and associated laboratory documentation. Monitor inventory of reagents, diagnostic kits, supplies, and disposables to ensure adequate material are available and prevent interruptions in testing. Assist with troubleshooting testing procedures, evaluation new reagent or kits, and implementing method improvements that enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of rabies testing. Comply with all departmental safety policies and procedures, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, the current edition of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, applicable CDC Select Agent requirements, and all other applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in biological sciences with emphasis on chemistry, mathematics, and/or computer science and two (2) years experience in biology, microbiology, virology, parasitological and/or molecular biology specialization in a laboratory setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation and drug testing is required and is conditional pending results. Working Conditions Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards.
