Job Description

Sterile Technician / Dental Assistant Job Description Position Summary The Sterile Technician/Dental Assistant is responsible for maintaining the highest standards of instrument sterilization, infection control, and clinical support while assisting the dental team in providing exceptional patient care. This role helps ensure that treatment rooms, instruments, and supplies are prepared efficiently so providers can deliver safe, high-quality dentistry in a clean and organized environment. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSterilization & Infection Control Clean, disinfect, package, and sterilize instruments according to OSHA, CDC, and office protocols. Monitor sterilization equipment and perform routine biological (spore) testing and documentation. Maintain sterilization logs and records as required. Ensure treatment rooms are cleaned, disinfected, and reset between patients. Organize and stock sterile instruments and supplies throughout the office. Monitor inventory levels and notify management when supplies need replenishment. Clinical Support Prepare treatment rooms before patient appointments. Assist dentists and hygienists during procedures as directed. Anticipate provider needs and maintain efficient clinical flow. Prepare dental materials and equipment for procedures. Escort patients to and from treatment rooms when needed. Take and process dental radiographs if certified and permitted by state regulations. Provide patient education and post-operative instructions as directed. Equipment & Maintenance Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of dental equipment. Ensure all instruments and equipment are functioning properly and report maintenance concerns promptly. Maintain organization of operatories, sterilization areas, and supply storage. Team Collaboration Support fellow assistants, hygienists, and front office staff as needed. Assist with opening and closing duties. Participate in daily huddles, meetings, and continuing education. Help maintain a positive, professional, and team-oriented work environment. Compliance & Safety Follow all OSHA, HIPAA, CDC, and office safety protocols. Maintain confidentiality of patient information. Properly dispose of biohazardous waste and sharps. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Dental assisting experience preferred but willing to train the right candidate. Current radiography certification. CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain. Knowledge of infection control and sterilization procedures. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Frequent bending, lifting, reaching, and repetitive hand movements. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Manual dexterity necessary for handling instruments and equipment.
