Minimum Qualifications Education:
Successful completion of a one of the following: Certificate or Associate Degree as a dental assistant/technician from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association (ADA) and 12 months experience within the preceding 36 months. Certification from a military dental technician or dental assistant school and 12 months experience within the preceding 36 months. Certification from a Red Cross Dental Assistant course and 12 months experience within the preceding 36 months. Membership in good standing with the American Association of Dental Assistants Graduation from a state accredited program for dental assistants or dental technology within the preceding 12 months. Shall have a Certificate of Training in dental therapy training or expanded function dental assisting plus at least one year experience.

All training must have included a course in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality; radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; film mounting; and, digital radiographic processing techniques.

Certified in radiography Six months of experience as a Dental Assistant after graduation.
SPECIFIC TASKS
• Dental Therapy Assistants shall perform essentially the same duties as those required of any government civil service Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) of similar experience and in similar duty assignments. Additional services may also include chairside dental assisting, Radiology, or sterilization. They may be occasionally needed for patient scheduling or records review but may not work routinely as a medical clerk or receptionist. • Performs Expanded Function Dental Assistant duties in one or more phases of complex/difficult restorative, prosthodontic, oral surgical, endodontic, or periodontal treatment. Restores teeth prepared by dentist with permanent or temporary fillings. Applies rubber dam, including cleansing and drying operative field. Irrigates tooth, applies prescribed medications, and closes tooth with temporary filling. Takes preliminary impressions for study models. • Retracts gingiva from tooth for final impressions. Assists in surgical treatment. Instructs patient in preventive dental care measures. Applies agents prescribed by dentists. Performs oral prophylaxis and provide therapeutic cares. Performs supra-gingival stain and calculus removal and scales teeth. Applies prescribed medication. Operates dental x-ray equipment to take intra and extra oral radiographs. Maintains a variety of recurring reports related to dental activities. Aids in the training of trainee dental assistants and/or dental assistant students. Observes and advises trainees and students as they perform these duties.
