FTE JOB DUTIES

This position is located in the Intensive Care/Coronary Care (ICU/CCU) department of Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai'i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua'i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai'i. The HHSC Kaua'i Region encompasses KVMH and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua'i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities. The ICU/CCU department is designed to provide advanced, life-saving care for patients experiencing critical illnesses or severe cardiac conditions. These units are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to monitor and support vital functions, including respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems. ICU/CCU staff, consisting of highly trained physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, deliver round-the-clock care, administer complex medical treatments, and respond promptly to emergencies. The primary goal of these units is to stabilize patients, manage acute conditions, and facilitate recovery while offering compassionate support to patients and their families during challenging times. This position is responsible for providing paraprofessional nursing care to individuals with kidney failure by preparing and operating dialysis machines, monitoring treatments, and performing vascular access cannulation using fistulas, grafts, or catheters. The acute hemodialysis technician works under the supervision of registered professional nurses and nephrologists to ensure safe, effective dialysis treatments. The position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. This position reports directly to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Unit Nurse Manager), position number 59229, or their designee.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants are required to provide evidence of education, certification, and licensure.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or equivalent.

CERTIFICATION

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of work experience, which involved independently observing and reporting on a variety of physical and/or mental symptoms and conditions and implementing care and/or treatment procedures for a caseload of acute care patients.

One (1) year of work experience in an acute hospital or outpatient dialysis unit, which provided knowledge of hemodialysis treatment and procedures.

Applicants must possess demonstrated experience and competency in independently performing vascular access cannulation of arteriovenous (AV) fistulas and grafts for hemodialysis treatments. Candidates must be able to safely assess and cannulate vascular access in accordance with established dialysis standards, clinical best practices, and facility policies. This competency is required at the time of hire and is considered an essential function of the position.

DESIRED SKILLS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

basic nursing skills (i.e., taking vital signs, measuring output, recognition of abnormal signs and symptoms, etc.); first aid; patients' rights; universal precautions; infection control; body mechanics; basic medical and nursing terminology; disinfection procedures; procedures for maintenance and care of equipment; hemodialysis treatment and procedures.

ABILITY TO

read, write, speak, and understand simple sentences in English; follow oral and written instructions precisely; and assist in providing paraprofessional nursing care to dialysis patients and patients receiving care on an outpatient basis; assist and participate in the activities of the treatment team.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm manner; ability to communicate and work effectively with acute and chronically ill individuals.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Completion of a professional nursing curriculum from an accredited school substitutes for the experience required for the entry level. Outpatient dialysis experience, which provided knowledge of hemodialysis treatment and procedures, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis (up to 2 years) for the entry level.
