POSITION PURPOSE
The Nutrition Services Consultant is responsible for implementing and overseeing the nutritional requirements of the program. The Nutrition Services Consultant provides leadership, consultation, and technical expertise to ensure the program complies with all federal, state, and local nutrition requirements. The consultant supports children's health, growth, and development by promoting healthy eating practices, conducting nutrition assessments, providing nutrition education, and collaborating with families, staff, healthcare providers, and community partners. This is a contractual, non-employee position with services performed under a contracted agreement. The Nutrition Services Consultant is expected to work on-site up to 8-hours per week.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Nutrition Services 1. Ensure compliance with all applicable Head Start Program Performance Standards, USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements, and state/local regulations related to nutrition services. 2. Review, evaluate, and approve menus to ensure compliance with
USDA CCFP
meal pattern requirements, nutritional adequacy, and appropriate accommodations for special dietary needs. 3. Review nutritional assessments of enrolled children, identify nutritional risks, and develop appropriate recommendations, interventions and referrals. 4. Review medical statements for special diets and ensure appropriate meal modifications are implemented. 5. Collaborate with staff and families to develop individualized nutrition plans for children with special dietary needs, food allergies, or medical conditions. 6. Assist staff with the implementation of special diets, food allergy management plans and emergency response procedures. 7. Provide individualized and familial nutrition counseling through individual consultations, educational workshops, newsletters, and classroom activities. 8. Train staff on child nutrition, food safety, healthy eating habits, feeding practices, nutrition-related regulations, and annual food program training requirements. Participate as the nutrition representative in Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings with appropriate staff, families, and other specialists when appropriate to coordinate services for children identified with nutritional or medical needs. 10. Serve as a nutrition resource for staff, families, and community partners. Evaluation, Assessment, and Internal Monitoring Conduct Food Program Site Inspections and monitor food service operations for compliance with all food safety and nutrition regulations. 2. Monitor Child Plus to ensure compliance with nutrition service regulations. 3. Review files to ensure compliance and for continuous quality improvement. 4. Participate in program self-assessment, monitoring reviews, and continuous quality improvement activities. Family Engagement and Community Partnerships 1. Support the role of families as lifelong educators. 2. Maintain effective communication with families. 3. Work cooperatively with families, staff, and partner agencies to meet the nutritional needs of children. 4. Educate families on culturally appropriate nutrition, breastfeeding support, infant/toddler feeding, childhood obesity, picky eaters, food insecurity, etc., using bilingual education materials when appropriate. Performance and Continuous Quality Improvement Adhere to agency policies and procedures and those of licensing and funding agencies (Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach, Head Start, Early Learning Coalition, Florida Voluntary Pre-K, etc.) Provide support in ensuring compliance with licensing and accreditation requirements related to nutrition services. 3. Assist in developing nutrition-related policies, procedures, and program goals. Analyze nutrition-related program data to identify trends, monitor outcomes, and support continuous quality improvement initiatives. Promote continuous quality improvement and quality assurance efforts. Take appropriate corrective action as needed. Respond appropriately to crisis or emergency situations that may occur. Perform First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as needed. Maintain confidentiality regarding staff, children and families enrolled. Documentation Report suspected child abuse and neglect to the designated state reporting agency (Florida Abuse Hotline) and document the report on the Child Abuse Report Form following agency policy and procedures. 2. Report and document all child, family and staff incidents, accidents, and unusual incidents when necessary following agency policy and procedures. 3. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, documentation, reports, and records required by the Head Start/Early Head Start program, the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program and other regulatory agencies. 4. Complete referrals for children with nutritional needs. 5. Utilize data management systems (Child Plus, ProCare, etc.) to enter data, run reports, and aggregate data. 6. Complete monthly Nutrition Services Reports Professional Development Complete and maintain any necessary annual in-service Training Requirements for program consultants. Attend and participate in training and appropriate professional development activities as deemed necessary to fulfill program requirements. Attend and participate in agency, nutrition services, and HMHSAC (Health Mental Health Services Advisory Committee) meetings as appropriate. 4. Stay current on evidence-based nutrition practices, federal regulations, and professional standards. 5. Maintain Registered Dietician Nutritionist (RDN) credentials and Florida Licensed Dietician / Nutritionist (LD / LN) licensure through completion of all required continuing professional education
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) regulations. Knowledge of Head Start Program Performance Standards and other local, state, and federal regulations governing child care facilities related to nutrition services. Knowledge of local, state and federal resources related to nutritional services. Understanding of child growth, development, and pediatric nutrition. Ability to conduct, review, and interpret nutrition assessments and growth data Knowledge of food allergies, special diets, and chronic health conditions affecting nutrition. Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Ability to work cooperatively and maintain supportive relationships with staff, community partners, children, and families. Ability to work with diverse groups and provide culturally responsive nutrition education. Strong organizational, documentation, and time management skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic health or child record systems. Ability to project a positive attitude and patient demeanor. Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries with staff and families. Sustained concentration and attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to be flexible regarding work assignments, changing demands, priorities and managing deadlines. Must be able to work independently without intensive supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
1. A bachelor's or advanced degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Transcripts are required to validate educational requirements. 2. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Licensed Dietician/Nutritionist (LD/N) required. 3. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in pediatric, community, or public health nutrition. 4. Previous Head Start/Early Head Start and/or CACFP experience preferred. 5. Certification in Pediatric First Aid/CPR preferred. 6.
Bilingual strongly preferred:
English and Spanish 7. Successful completion of Level II Background Screening. 8. Consultant is responsible for maintaining all required professional licensure, certifications, liability insurance, and tax obligations associated with the independent contractor status.
