Videos Duties Help The duties for the Dietitian (Advanced Level Practice) include the following: Leads dietitians and speciality multidisciplinary teams in developing nutrition reled services, policies, procedures and/or protocols. Provides comprehensive medical nutritional care applying the NCP in a specialty program, and/or a variety of pient care settings. Bases individualized nutrition interventions on the best available research and/or evidence-based guidelines and best practices. Provides nutrition educion to individuals, small and large groups, peers, licensed practitioner(s), medical students, interns, and residents as applicable. Provides consultive services regarding advanced therapies, policies, procedures, and research in the provision of quality nutritional care Develops, monitors, and directs practice-specific benchmarks based on standards of care or nional initiives. Utilizes knowledge, expertise, principles and/or current research to plan, implement and evalue organizional initiives.
  • Leads the implemention of new nutrition initiives or a change in practice to achieve stregic goals.
Establishes goals, measures outcomes and reports progress toward meeting goals to medical center committees, health care teams and/or professional groups. Leads staff, crees, and valides competencies and develops training activities. Leads nutrition research studies or performance improvement and communices findings through reports, abstracts, presentions and/or peer-reviewed professional publicions. Presents seminars, workshops, and lectures to convey current nutrition informion on new and changing concepts. May perform other reled duties as assigned which are approprie for this grade and assignment.

Dietitian candides must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Registrion. (1) All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registrion (CDR) the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Note:
Applicants who hold the RDN credential have met the educion requirement (e.g. bachelor's degree or higher) of CDR, as such this occupion is considered professional and scientific with a positive educion requirement and the procedures in Part I, Chapter 4 of this Handbook followed when applying Veteran's preference. Foreign Educion. To be creditable, college and/or university degrees earned outside the U.S and its territories must be evalued by ACEND® and meet ACEND®'s Internional Dietitian Educion standards which are designed to provide gradues with the knowledge and competencies to sit for the CDR credentialing exam. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfhering Provision as described in the VA Qualificion Standard for this occupion (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupion and meet the criteria). Grandfhering Provision. Employees in VHA in this occupion, under a permanent, approprie and legal placement on the effective de of the qualificion standard, are considered to have met all qualificion requirements for the grade and/or assignment held, including positive educion and registrion/certificion, where applicable. Employees appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective de of the qualificion standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, either on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. The following provisions apply to employees who do not meet all the qualificion requirements: (1) Employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level or changed to a lower grade within the occupion, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or be newly placed in a supervisory or managerial position. (2) Employees must meet the assignment-specific certificion/educion requirements to be placed in Dietitian (Advanced Level Practice) or Dietitian (Dietetic Internship Director) assignments. (3) Employees initially grandfhered into this occupion who subsequently obtain additional educion and/or registrion/certificion th meet all the qualificion standard's basic or assignment-specific requirements must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupion/assignment. (4) Employees retained in this occupion under this provision and subsequently leave the occupion lose protected stus and must meet the full VA qualificion standard requirements in effect the time of re-entry in the occupion.
Grade Determinions :
GS-12. Experience . One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Certificion. Must hold an advanced practice certificion from a nionally recognized certifying body such as the Commission on Dietetic Registrion, the Associion of Diabetes Care and Educion Specialists or the Nional Board of Nutrition Certificion. The certificion must be directly reled to the assignment being filled. For example, where the assignment requires diabetes management, a Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management or Certified Diabetes Care and Educion Specialists certificion is qualifying. Commonly held certificions include Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition; Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition; Registered Dietitian Nutritionist-Advanced Practitioner; Certified Nutrition Support Clinician. This position requires Board Certificion in Oncology Nutrition (CSO). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience and certificion above, the candide must demonstre the following

(a) Skill in leading a team in the implemention of nutrition-reled activities. (b) Skill in utilizing evidence
  • based practice guidelines to establish or modify goals and improve pient outcomes.
(c) Ability to communice in writing to develop policies and standard opering procedures. (d) Ability to serve as a nutrition expert, providing technical guidance, direction and staff development. (e) Ability to lead research or performance improvement studies. (f) Ability to present complex nutrition informion to a large group of health care providers to persuade and influence provision of care.
