GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under the supervision of the Chief Clinical Dietitian. The Clinical Dietitian's primary job function is responsibility for coordinating the daily activities of clinical nutrition, supervising the work of the Registered Nutritionist. To assess the nutritional needs of individuals in health and disease and develop plans of care to promote health and well being utilizing scientific knowledge as well as principles of behavior management. Provides and/or coordinates nutrition education and counseling to individuals and groups. Takes action to increase patient satisfaction by problem-solving and problem referral. Provided technical support to the department and hospital. Interacts professionally as part of the health care team to ensure quality, timeliness, and excellence of service. Supports the mission and values of the hospital. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics or related nutrition field required
  • Completion of post grad ADA Program from an accredited institution required
Licensure:
  • Commission on Dietetic Registration required
  • LD - Ohio Board of Dietetics required
Experience:
  • One to two years clinical dietetics or administrative dietetics preferred
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time. 1. Assists the Chief Clinical Dietitian in the orientation and training of new Dietitians and Registered Nutritionists, and coordinates the work load among each. 2. Develops, documents, and implements age-appropriate nutritional care plans for patients based on assessment of patient's needs through medical record review, patient/significant other interview or observation, and discussion with health care team. Participates in developing departmental standards of patient care. 3. Develops, implements, and evaluates programs in nutrition education for patients and/or the community. Provides individual nutrition counseling for inpatients and outpatients about normal nutrition or therapeutic diets. Teaches classes about nutrition in order to promote prevention of disease and/or restoration of health. Selects and develops age and literacy appropriate instructional materials. 4. Provides inservice education and serves as an expert resource for nutrition services staff, medical staff, nursing and allied health staffs, as well as for other departments such as public relations and marketing. 5. Participates in quality assessment and performance improvement activities including collection of data and implementation of plans to improve quality of patient care. 6. Acts as team leader for patient service team; indirectly supervises and aids in evaluating Call Center Clerk/Ambassadors and Registered Nutritionist in their daily routine. Checks accuracy of diet orders when in question and provides consultation regarding appropriateness of patient menu selections. 7.
Others activities include:
participates in interdisciplinary patient care panels/conferences, departmental and hospital meetings/committees, maintains current education programs. The clinical dietitian has opportunities for public speaking including radio and television broadcasts in the primary role of a nutrition expert by secondarily as a public relations representative for SOMC.
