Clinical Dietitian
Hours:
1 to 9 hours per week (flexible with the days) Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) or dietetic technician credential required The Clinical Dietitian provides nutrition assessments, individualized care planning, nutrition education, and counseling for clients and their families within our inpatient, residential, outpatient, and outreach treatment programs. This role serves as an advocate to ensure clients have the resources needed to meet their daily nutritional needs while engaged in treatment. All services are delivered within a multidisciplinary team approach to promote overall wellness and long-term health outcomes. Essential Job Functions Serve as an advocate for clients to ensure adequate resources are available to meet their daily nutritional needs. Complete comprehensive nutritional assessments, including evaluation of diet, beverages, supplements, and medications that influence medical status. Develop individualized Nutrition Care Plans that guide treatment and emphasize collaboration between the client, treatment team, and support systems to support wellness of the body and mind. Provide individual and group counseling/education on food-based dietary recommendations, nutritional supplementation to correct deficiencies, and nutrition-related recovery education. Supervise food service operations in 24/7 programs, including scheduling staff, developing menus, and overseeing food ordering and supply management. Provide in-service trainings and education for staff as needed. Work as a collaborative member of the treatment team across outpatient, outreach, inpatient, and residential programs. Perform initial and ongoing assessments of clients' needs, motivations, and backgrounds; prepare substance use bio-psychosocial summaries to determine appropriate level of care. Meets productivity requirements by utilizing various techniques to engage clients and minimize failed appointments and maintaining an acceptable case load which engages and motivates clients throughout treatment. Effectively utilizes agency's medical records software program(s) to complete required medical record documentation in a timely and comprehensive manner and in compliance with NYS OASAS and federal regulations including Public Health Law, 42CFR and patient confidentiality policies. Secondary Functions
- Collaborate with other providers and referral sources to increase understanding of client needs and strengths.
- Participate as an active member of the interdisciplinary team for coordinated care delivery.
- Engage in professional supervision, ongoing education, and weekly case management staff meetings to support continuous improvement.
- Reviews policies, procedures, laws, and regulations regularly to ensure compliance.
- Performs other related work as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of nutrition and it's correlation with substance use disorder.
- Basic knowledge of substance abuse problems and their effects on the individual and family members including human behavior, attitudes, and motivations and their applicability in the treatment/rehabilitation of the substance abuser and/or offender.
- Intermediary knowledge of substance abuse counseling and treatment principles, practices, and techniques and competent knowledge of individual and group behavior including interviewing techniques.
- Familiarity with resources available to individuals with substance use disorders.
- Ability to recognize symptoms of substance abuse and identify contributing factors.
- Ability to manage a caseload of clients, conduct assessments, prepare bio-psychosocial summaries, and create progress reports and evaluations.
- Strong documentation skills with proficiency in electronic recordkeeping, spreadsheets, and related software.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and the general public. - The employee may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds The Clinical Dietitian must be able to prioritize situations and manage time and may find that they are needed at irregular hours causing fatigue and stress.
May experience stress and stress related symptoms due to interacting with clients in crisis. They may be exposed to illness and unsanitary conditions so must take care to protect their own health. They may also have to manage physically threatening clients and be prepared to be responsible for their own safety, and the safety of others. Work Environment The employee is expected to adhere to strict policies/regulations relative to being in a tobacco and alcohol free workplace. Work is primarily performed in a standard office or clinical environment. Qualifications Minimum of a Bachelor's degree with a major in nutrition, dietetics or other related field. 2 years of experience working in behavioral health, addiction treatment, or inpatient/residential healthcare preferred. Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) or dietetic technician credential required Must successfully complete additional training requirements based on
NYS OASAS
standards, which include:
- Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT)
- 3 hours
- Introductory training to addiction n CASAC Canon of Ethics
- 6 hours n Confidentiality related to 42CFR
