TITLE:
Dietitian
JOB OVERVIEW
The Dietitian position entails responsibility for quality patient nutrition care management through assessments, recommendations and nutrition care orders, provision of diet education, and multidisciplinary communication. A dietitian holds an informal role and thus is a role model and resource for all in the FMNS department.

Manager of Clinical Nutrition and Dietary Services
PREREQUISITES
Is currently a Registered Dietitian (RD) by the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics with 0-5 years experience as an RD. Certified Dietitian in the State of Washington is required (must be obtained within three months of passing the Registration Examination for Registered Dietitians and within the probationary period for the credentialed dietitian). Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English. Able to work on weekends and holidays. Able to meet the professional appearance standards of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrates good interpersonal skills in a diverse population. Demonstrates ability to work independently. Able to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional developments of all age groups. Demonstrates experience in providing excellent customer service. Demonstrates basic knowledge of working a computer.
UNIQUE PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT, AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Extensive walking (65% + of shift) Lifting of moderate to heavy weights (5-20kg). Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires the ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously. Requires frequent changes and interruptions to respond to all requests. Requires independent problem-solving skills, compiling information and explanation of department procedures and services. Requires frequent trips from the FMNS Department to patient units and patient rooms, charting and overseeing the maintenance of accurate records

Essential Responsibilities and Competencies :
Assist in day-to-day operations of the FMNS department, which may include relief coverage and modification to standard scheduled hours or units assigned. Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior towards patients, visitors, co-workers and staff. Maintains a safe and sanitary work environment according to department standards. Contributes to the department's professional image and adds to the department's ability to provide quality food service. Maintains responsibility for time management and best utilization of resources, including flexing hours in times of low census. Assists with reviewing and updating written materials and displays and computer programs/tools. Recognizes and adopts activities appropriate to the specific needs of the patient population and demonstrates knowledge of specific issues directly related to age of the patient population. Maintains continuing education in areas of pediatric, adult and geriatric nutrition per clinical job specificity. Adjusts meal plans for patients according to their developmental age (neonatal, infant, pediatric, adult, geriatric) and cultural needs. Maintains professional growth and development to ensure competency. Works cooperatively with other members of the health care team and the FMNS department to accomplish necessary tasks in the provision of optimal patient care. Contributes to marketing and promoting the hospital and FMNS department by being an active and informed member of the VMC staff. Maintains professional communication with all VMC physicians and office staff. Maintains responsibility for screening/assessing patients per departmental standards, updating patient diet orders and recording patient lab data. Maintains responsibility for nutritional care of Level 3 and Level 4 risk patients and documents in a timely manner. Provides leadership through direction, motivation and monitoring of FMNS employees. Acts as a nutrition resource for all FMNS team members. Instructs patients on diets/nutrition as needed or per protocols. Maintains responsibility for written communication regarding diets. Actively involved in FMNS Department performance improvement through data collection and monitoring. Communicates customer feedback to the appropriate persons for follow-up and/or action. Completes jobs as assigned and performs other related job duties as required. Participates in monthly audits-including but not limited to patient rounding and productivity reports. If has an FTE status of 0.4 or greater, participates in a hospital wide committee. For Dietitians who work 1:1 with outpatients, BLS is required within 90 days of employment.
