Job Description
Director of Nursing A skilled nursing and long-term care organization is seeking an experienced Director of Nursing to provide clinical leadership and oversight for the nursing department within a healthcare facility setting. The Director of Nursing is responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating nursing services to ensure residents receive high-quality care in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This position works closely with facility leadership, clinical teams, physicians, residents, families, and outside agencies to support safe, effective, and compliant nursing operations. Key Responsibilities The Director of Nursing will be responsible for a variety of clinical, administrative, and leadership duties, including but not limited to: Providing overall leadership and direction for the nursing department and its daily operations Developing, implementing, and maintaining nursing policies, procedures, systems, and standards of practice Ensuring nursing services are delivered in accordance with current regulations, professional standards, and facility expectations Monitoring quality measures, clinical outcomes, survey readiness, and areas of potential risk Participating in facility surveys, inspections, audits, and plans of correction as needed Supporting the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement process through review of trends, concerns, and corrective action plans Coordinating nursing services with other departments to promote continuity of care and effective communication Reviewing resident care needs and assisting with admission decisions, discharge planning, care planning, and clinical service coordination Ensuring appropriate nursing documentation, including nurses' notes, assessments, care plans, and related clinical records Overseeing nursing staffing levels, schedules, assignments, and coverage to support resident care needs Providing supervision, coaching, education, counseling, and performance feedback to nursing personnel Assisting with recruitment, orientation, training, evaluations, and ongoing development of nursing staff Ensuring nursing personnel maintain required licenses, certifications, credentials, and training Promoting fair and consistent employee relations practices in coordination with facility leadership and Human Resources Supporting infection prevention, safety, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance initiatives Ensuring nursing areas, medication rooms, treatment areas, and resident care areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and organized manner Monitoring the availability and appropriate use of medical supplies, equipment, medications, and personal protective equipment Reviewing resident and family concerns, complaints, or grievances and ensuring appropriate follow-up Maintaining confidentiality of resident information and ensuring compliance with HIPAA and resident rights requirements Participating in required meetings, committees, in-services, and continuing education programs Performing other related duties as assigned Qualifications The ideal candidate will have: Current, active, and unencumbered Registered Nurse license required Nursing degree from an accredited college or university preferred Minimum of three years of supervisory experience in a skilled nursing facility, nursing care facility, hospital, or related healthcare setting preferred Experience with rehabilitative and restorative nursing preferred Strong knowledge of nursing practices, clinical standards, long-term care regulations, and survey processes Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, organizational, and decision-making skills Ability to effectively lead, coach, and hold nursing staff accountable Strong communication skills with residents, families, physicians, staff, leadership, and outside agencies Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment Commitment to quality care, resident rights, compliance, teamwork, and professional standards Working Conditions This position works in both office and clinical care areas throughout the facility, including nursing stations, resident rooms, medication rooms, treatment areas, and other resident care spaces. The Director of Nursing may be required to work beyond normal business hours, participate in on-call responsibilities, and respond to urgent or emergency facility needs as required. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to move throughout the facility on an intermittent basis and interact with residents, staff, families, visitors, and outside agencies. The role may involve standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, and lifting or assisting with resident care needs or equipment as required. The position may require lifting up to 45 pounds periodically, with or without reasonable accommodation.
