Job Description
General Purpose The Director of Staff Development (DSD) is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining the facility's orientation, in-service training, job skills development, and—when applicable—nursing assistant certification programs. Working closely with the Director of Nursing and Administrator, the DSD ensures a high standard of staff competency and patient care. This role also includes direct resident/patient care responsibilities as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Note:
This is not an exhaustive list but highlights primary duties associated with the role. Training & Education Program Oversight Plan, organize, and conduct all required staff in-service training and continuing education. Develop annual and monthly in-service calendars; maintain records of all trainings. Assess training needs based on surveys, evaluations, observations, and leadership input. Prepare and submit required documentation to the Department of Health related to staff training. Coordinate and document emergency drills including fire, internal disaster, and mass casualty events. Plan and conduct nursing assistant certification programs (as applicable). Administrative & HR Coordination Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and hiring staff. Coordinate employment-related paperwork and documentation. Administer employee payroll and benefits programs in coordination with HR. Ensure regulatory compliance with all staff training records and policies. Clinical Responsibilities Provide direct patient/resident care as needed. Make rounds to observe care delivery and ensure regulatory compliance. Support infection control surveillance and reporting. Take appropriate disciplinary actions when necessary and supervise designated staff. Communication & Staff Engagement Present training materials clearly and effectively. Foster a cooperative, enthusiastic, and professional working environment. Maintain a neat, well-groomed appearance and lead by example. Engage positively with residents, families, and all staff. Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance Participate in facility inspections and surveys. Maintain employee, resident, and patient confidentiality at all times. Contribute to facility quality assurance programs and improvement initiatives. Supervisory Responsibilities This role includes supervisory duties involving staff education, training compliance, and direct oversight of nursing personnel during training programs or clinical supervision. The DSD may also be involved in performance feedback and discipline as necessary. Qualifications Education & Experience Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurse (LVN/LPN) in the state. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Minimum of 1 year providing direct patient care in a long-term care setting. At least 1 year of experience in planning and implementing education programs in nursing. 2+ years of experience in a long-term care facility preferred. Certificates & Licenses Current RN or LVN/LPN license in good standing. Current CPR certification. Knowledge and experience with PCC (PointClickCare) preferred. Ongoing compliance with state continuing education and licensing requirements. Skills & Competencies Ability to present technical and policy information clearly. Effective communication with staff, managers, and residents. Basic math skills, including working with ratios, percentages, and proportions. Capable of interpreting instructions in written, diagram, oral, or schedule formats. Ability to maintain enthusiasm and develop strong working relationships across departments.Physical Demands Standing and/or walking:
