FLSA Status Non-ExemptJob Role Summary The Emergency Medical Technician responds in an emergency vehicle under emergent and non-emergent conditions and provides emergency medical care at the basic life support level.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Provides emergency medical care at the basic life support level according to Indianapolis EMS practices and policies, established protocols, verbal and written orders and state regulationsMonitors patients while in transport and continues treatment initiated on the sceneDrives an emergency vehicle under emergent and non-emergent conditionsPerform patient assessments and initiate appropriate treatmentAssists the paramedic as indicatedMaintains ambulance in operable conditions, which includes cleanliness, orderliness and prompt restocking of equipment and supplies; determines vehicle readiness by checking fuel, lights, tires, and start/stop capabilitiesMaintain communication and medical equipment in the field and report defects for repair or replacement Respond to runs from dispatcherCoordinate with healthcare facilities regarding patients' vital statisticsComplete patient care reports and other documentationProvides age-appropriate care (i.e. neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric)Coordinates public safety personnel in emergency situationsAssociated Job Duties May function alone or as a member of a team Safely operate in and around emergency equipment Takes safety precautions to protect the injured and those assisting in the care of the patient(s) Protects the patient(s), self, and other providers from possible contamination Attends continuing education, refresher courses, medical audit programs and training programs as required by IEMS, medical direction, or certifying agency Performs other job related duties as assigned Job Requirements High school diploma or equivalent (GED)Indiana Emergency Medical Technician•Basic CertificationValid Indiana Driver's License•must meet and remain in compliance with IEMS driver eligibility policyAmerican Heart Association CPR CertificationEmergency Vehicle Operator CertificationContinuing education to maintain all required certificationsKnowledge, Skills & Abilities Normal use of limbs, eyes, ears and voice required to treat patients and to operate sophisticated electronic devicesHear spoken information from co-workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, other allied health personnel bystanders, and public safety professionals and sound in common to the emergency sceneExcellent verbal communication skillsExercises independent judgment in critical, emergency situationsDetail orientedInteract in a calm, effective and courteous manner with patients, public, and hospital staffResponsiblity Maintains patient and family confidentiality Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations Judgment Employee may work under general supervision and receives general guidance on work priority with substantial employee latitude

•INTERNAL/EXTERNAL Regular contact with physicians and medical staff, police and fire departments to provide and obtain information and instructions Regular contact with general public to provide care Special Effort Required Lift up to 125 lbs. equally distributed and up to 250 lbs. with assistance Heavy lifting for sustained periods; heavy and awkward lifting of patients and/or equipment over difficult terrain for several yards; intense strain for short periods of time Drive an emergency vehicle under emergency conditions and non-emergent conditions Carry a stair chair 30 yards, up two flights of stairs, then down two flights of stairs with a patient attached Carry tech box, oxygen equipment bag and ECG monitor up two flights of stairs Kneel, stoop, bend, crawl, walk and crouch for extended periods of time, on uneven surfaces and confined spaces, including kneeling long enough to perform two hundred chest compressions in 2 minutes Working Environment Stressful emergency situations Works in both a well-lit and properly equipped ambulance and in inadequately lighted spaces with no backup equipment or personnel Environments involving crowds, noise, and confusion in all temperatures and inclement weather conditions Daily involvement with hazardous working conditions, chance of serious injury or loss of life It is Indianapolis EMS' philosophy and policy to treat employees and applicants fairly and without regard to sex, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran's status or physical or mental ability.
