Job Description

Collects, records, and maintains various patient data. Performs a variety of clerical duties and assists in the implementation of patient care while functioning as the focal communication source in the Emergency Department. Sets up, stocks and maintains patient area and equipment as directed. Documents in medical record and helps prepare patient for examination. Functions within the level of his/her certification and department policies/procedures. Work cooperatively with staff and physicians to achieve the highest quality of care for patients. Recognizes age specific need differences, and implements correct measures or reports needs. Performs other related responsibilities when necessary as assigned by the Emergency Dept. Manager or designee. Identifies health and safety concerns and unsafe work practices within the workplace. Is involved in developing safe work practices and is held accountable for the day to day efforts of ensuring a safe workplace by following safe work practices. Prepares patients for visit or procedure by taking vital signs, weight, and other pertinent information per physician protocol and assists practitioner when required. Participates in patient education. Cleanses wounds, changes dressings, and removes sutures. Additional duties as assigned if trained and demonstrated competency Knowledge of Excel, Meditech, Word, and other programs as needed. Cleaning and taking instruments to OR to be sterilized. Practices within the guidelines of job description and refers patients to physician or nurse if unable to provide/satisfy patient needs or answer questions. Contributes to hospital and department Quality Improvement goals. Effectively maintains ongoing communication with co-workers and supervisors, keeping them informed of pertinent information that effects patients care, physician issues, and/or other departmental issues of concern. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with physicians, staff, peers, and public/customers. Administers allergy injections and employee health vaccines after demonstrated competency and with understanding of dosage, side effects, allergic reaction, and after checking order and dosage with nurse. Demonstrates knowledge of universal precautions and sterile technique. Perform accucheck control checks Responsible for reporting on the condition of patient to the appropriate nurse or physician. Receives direction from physicians and nurses and provide technical support to optimize patient care. Cleans and stocks carts, room, and changes linen Assists with transport of patients to other departments. Assists with resuscitation/CPR and emergency airway procedures Assist with obtaining and documentation of vital signs and placement of oxygen saturation, cardiac monitoring, and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring systems. Assist with other technical functions such as: obtaining 12-lead EKG's, discontinuation and insertion of peripheral IV catheters, and maintenance and care of specimens for laboratory analysis. Assist with wound care, insertion of foley catheters, and nasogastric tubes. Assists with positioning patients, application of orthopedic splints and dressings. Measure and fit crutches, instruct patients on proper use of crutches. BLS required upon hire and maintained throughout employment. High school diploma or equivalent. Medical Assistant, EMT or Paramedic education completed upon hire required. Willingness to obtain State of Michigan TB Certification. One year of medical experience preferred.
