Job Description

TITLE:
Full-Time WIC Lactation Specialist
REPORTS TO
Local Agency Breastfeeding Coordinator or Director of Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC)
CLASSIFICATION
Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY
A WIC Lactation Specialist offers lactation education and instruction to pregnant and breastfeeding clients enrolled in our WIC program.
RESPONSIBILIITES
Educates and counsels breastfeeding WIC clients by telephone, home visits, and/or in the WIC clinic on designated days or by appointment. Receives a caseload of WIC participants and makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned or referred. Completes referrals and call-backs within the timeframe of Local Agency policy. Utilize advanced breastfeeding skills to assist with referrals outside of the scope of breastfeeding peer counselors. Refers clients to IBCLC as needed. Educate on use, cleaning and assembly of breast pumps; expression and storage of breast milk; and assist Breastfeeding Coordinator with breast pump issuance and loaner pump returns as needed. Respects each participant by keeping information strictly confidential and follows State and Local Agency policy on confidentiality. Maintains accurate records of all contacts made with WIC participants in MI-WIC and submits productivity data to supervisor as required. Assist Local Agency with any staff training/mentoring as needed. Attends and assists with all Local Agency breastfeeding classes and workshops as appropriate. Attend all required WIC breastfeeding trainings, webinars, and conferences. Assists WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned. Assist Breastfeeding Coordinator with all duties as assigned. Refers clients to available resources including: o IBCLC o Breastfeeding Coordinator o WIC Nutritionist o WIC Registered Dietitian o Physician o Public health programs in the community o Social service agencies • Perform other related duties as assigned. • Expected to rotate through

clinics as assigned by Breastfeeding Coordinator
EDUCATION
High School diploma or GED. Completed all necessary trainings required by Local Agency and MI WIC for this position. Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS), Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), or Lactation Counselor and Educator (LCE) title must be held at time of hire and maintained throughout employment in this position.
EXPERIENCE
Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding) successfully for six months or longer. Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience breastfeeding. One (1) year of Breastfeeding Peer Counselor experience preferred.
TRAINING
Maintain your credentials. Reviews current breastfeeding information and updates educational material as needed. Attend all required WIC breastfeeding trainings, webinars, and conferences.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Must have reliable transportation. Interest in the health and care of infants and mothers. Works primarily indoors. Travel may be required to Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan offices and other WIC program sites with exposure to road hazards and temperature extremes. Will be required to work evening hours on some days during the week. Will be required to work some assigned Saturdays throughout the year.
Pay:
$21.00 - $22.00 per hour
