POSITION SUMMARY
The Lactation Consultant will collaborate with other members of the healthcare team and WIC team to ensure the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding. They will provide direct patient/participant care for breastfeeding mother-baby day. The Lactation Consultant will report to the WIC Program Manager.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Manage patient queue Follow-up with patients by phone Develop and provide breastfeeding information to patients Communicate with providers regarding patient condition and document care given Assist in maintaining & tracking breastfeeding supplies inventory Selects & develops breastfeeding education materials Participates in professional meetings, trainings, and continuing education Participates in local meetings and initiatives Promote breastfeeding as the norm to all pregnant and postpartum patients and their families Provides WIC participant centered education when counseling participants Identify high risk WIC participants in need of an referral to the WIC dietitian Provides follow-up breastfeeding support to WIC participants Acts on all referrals and warm hand-offs from other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding situations beyond their scope of practice Assesses and counsels WIC mothers and their infants with complex breastfeeding situations Demonstrate, use, and issue breast pumps to breastfeeding participants Attends staff meetings as assigned Promotes breastfeeding as the norm to all pregnant and postpartum WIC participants and their families Complete and review computer forms and/or data entry into computer Travels to different sites as needed Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Bilingual English/Spanish preferred Provide copy of Basic Life Support certificate Valid California driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and personal transportation
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of principles and practices of social work and counseling techniques Knowledge of office management principles and practices Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public Skill in public speaking Ability to write reports, correctly reflecting intervention and document progress Ability to utilize basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Requires frequent walking and standing for prolonged periods of time. Requires sitting for prolonged periods of time. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity necessary to utilize computer keyboard in daily activities. Requires exposure to communicable diseases. Requires ability to drive automobile or similar transportation to attend various clinics and other functions. Must be able to occasionally lift or push up to 50 pounds.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure to communicable diseases, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a public health and clinic environment. Works nights and weekends as needed.
