Full Job Description Position Summary:
Leads, directs, and monitors health information management services across multiple domains and facilities, ensuring regulatory compliance, electronic health record data, and reporting integrity, promoting best practices, streamlined operations, and education and training coordinated with Medical Staff, Nursing, Revenue Cycle, Information Technology and other areas of the hospital. Hires, evaluates, and trains staff members to ensure a high level of performance in the execution of required tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Oversees the HIM department staffing and operations, ensuring processes and controls are evaluated against the organization's internal and external information needs on an ongoing basis, spanning the entire life cycle of the patient's health record, including post-care audits and regulatory agency requests. 2. Initiates, reviews, implements, and maintains contracts related to HIM operations. 3. Develops and executes plans of action for moving from paper to an online fully integrated electronic health record environment for the hospital and integrated with ancillary and ambulatory needs. 4. Ensures the HIM department works closely with key stakeholder departments, fostering a positive and collaborative relationship in developing, monitoring, and maintaining the patient's chart and electronic health record. Protects the data integrity, privacy, and security of the patient's health record in compliance with regulatory requirements and hospital policies and procedures. 5. Designs, performs, and appropriately utilizes the findings of performance improvement activities of health information management services. 6. Serves as an internal consultant on health information management issues including the release of information, confidentiality, information security, information storage, and retrieval, and record retention and destruction practices, as well as authoring and authenticating health record documentation, standardization of medical vocabularies, and use of classification systems. 7. Develops and manages operational budgets and finances for the HIM department in addition to justifying and managing capital improvements related to HIM operations with cost-effective solutions. 8. Participates and/or leads various committees such as but not limited to the Medical Staff or Medical Records committee, hospital-wide performance improvement committees, documentation improvement committees, and enterprise-wide Electronic Health Record related committees. 9. Provides training and educational opportunities to improve staff and key stakeholder departmental users to improve quality, performance, and electronic health record compliance.
