Schedule:

Casual position requiring a minimum of 8 hours per week, with day and night shifts required. Purpose The Senior Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides routine patient care and supports departmental services in accordance with established policies, procedures, and direction from nursing and medical staff. The Senior PCT is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care while demonstrating advanced clinical competencies and supporting a safe, patient-centered environment. In addition to successfully completing training and annual competency requirements, the Senior PCT routinely performs UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities, including:

+ Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients

+ Point-of-care testing, including blood glucose monitoring

+ Vital signs, weights, intake and output documentation

+ Telemetry monitor application and reapplication

+ Hospital Acquired Condition (HAC) and Patient Safety Indicator (PSI) prevention measures, including TED hose and SCD application The Senior PCT also performs:

+ Simple dressing changes

+ Placement and removal of restraints

+ Bladder scanning

+ Specimen collection

+ Peripheral IV catheter removal

+ Indwelling Foley catheter removal

+ Phlebotomy/venipuncture

+ Completion of "Ticket to Ride" documentation In addition to standard competencies, the Senior PCT will achieve and maintain competency in one or more advanced skills based on departmental needs, including:

+ Basic arrhythmia interpretation

+ Complex wound care + 12-lead EKG performance

+ Nasogastric (NG) tube clamping and removal Responsibilities

+ Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and all members of the healthcare team.

+ Demonstrate understanding and respect for cultural diversity, workplace safety, professionalism, and impairment awareness within the healthcare profession.

+ Support a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

+ Develop and maintain effective working relationships through accountability, professionalism, enthusiasm, and commitment to patient care.

+ Report equipment malfunctions promptly and coordinate with appropriate departments to ensure timely resolution.

+ Contribute to unit operations by responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and assisting with patient transport.

+ Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies as directed.

+ Observe and report changes in patient condition to the registered nurse.

+ Provide patient and family education under the direction of the RN.

+ Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy.

+ Accept feedback constructively and identify opportunities for professional growth and development.

+ Participate in departmental projects, quality initiatives, and committee work as assigned.

+ Support process improvements and departmental change initiatives.

+ Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, confidentiality standards, and safety protocols, including standard precautions.

+ Document patient care accurately and timely within the medical record.

+ Transport cardiac-monitored patients throughout the hospital as needed.

+ Complete clerical and administrative duties to support unit operations.

+ Maintain all required competencies and certifications. Performs duties in accordance with UPMC system-wide competencies and behavioral expectations.

+ High school diploma or equivalent required.

+ Current enrollment in an accredited Nursing Program and one of the following:

+ Two years of healthcare experience and qualifications that meet the Patient Care Technician requirements; or

+ One year of healthcare experience and completion of at least one clinical rotation; or

+ Successful completion of the UPMC Student Nurse Internship Program.

+ Successful completion of basic information systems training required.

+ Microcomputer experience preferred.

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

+ Nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation preferred.

+ Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program, preferred.

+ May be required to successfully complete the appropriate UPMC Cardiac Rhythm Course based on organizational guidelines and unit-specific clinical needs.

+ In the course of patient care duties, may have access to medication storage areas or transport medications while accompanying patients. Medication transport is limited to movement between departments. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

+ Current CPR certification required within 30 days of hire, based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards that include both a didactic and hands-on skills demonstration component.

+ Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.

+ Act 31 Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training (Mandated Reporter) required within 90 days of hire or transfer.

+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

+ Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

+ Act 33 with renewal

+ Act 34 with renewal
