For the past 40 years, Us Helping Us has provided innovative services, programs, and activities to improve the health and wellbeing of racial, sexual, and gender minorities, especially Black sexual minority men, people with HIV (PWH), and persons with substance use and mental health disorders. As it exists today, Us Helping Us offers a variety of clinical, behavioral, and social services in a trusting, affirming, and inclusive environment. Importantly, Us Helping Us is a multi-service organization that is client-centric and provides coordinated, compassionate services that assist clients in realizing their full potential. Position Summary The Director of Health and Wellness provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for the organization's integrated health and wellness services. This position is responsible for overseeing the delivery of high-quality, client-centered medical, behavioral health, prevention, and wellness services while ensuring operational excellence, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, financial stewardship, and exceptional client outcomes. Reporting to the Community Health Manager, the Director partners closely with organizational leadership to develop and implement innovative models of integrated care that improve access to comprehensive health services for historically underserved communities. The Director oversees clinical operations, workforce development, quality management, grant implementation, and interdisciplinary collaboration while fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, equity, and continuous improvement. The Director maintains an active but limited clinical practice, as needed, to support organizational operations, maintain clinical competency, and satisfy payer credentialing requirements. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Clinical and Operational Leadership (30%) Provide strategic and operational leadership for all Health and Wellness programs, including medical, behavioral health, prevention, care coordination, and wellness services. Develop, implement, and evaluate departmental goals, strategic initiatives, operational plans, and performance objectives aligned with organizational priorities. Oversee day-to-day clinical operations to ensure high-quality, efficient, client-centered service delivery. Develop, implement, and maintain clinical policies, procedures, protocols, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) consistent with evidence-based practice and regulatory requirements. Monitor program performance, productivity, client access, and operational efficiency while identifying opportunities for improvement. Ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, workflow optimization, and utilization of personnel, equipment, and other organizational resources. Collaborate with Finance and executive leadership to develop, monitor, and manage departmental budgets and grant-funded initiatives. Strategic Planning and Program Development (20%) Collaborate with executive leadership to develop long-range strategic plans for integrated health and wellness services. Identify opportunities to expand programs, clinical services, and community partnerships that improve access to care. Support grant development activities by contributing program design, operational planning, staffing models, budgets, and implementation strategies. Lead implementation of new clinical programs, service lines, and evidence-based practices. Monitor emerging healthcare trends, regulatory changes, reimbursement models, and best practices to strengthen organizational services. Promote innovation through implementation of new technologies, workflows, and models of integrated care. Staff Leadership and Workforce Development (20%) Recruit, hire, supervise, coach, mentor, and evaluate managers, licensed clinicians, nurses, medical assistants, and other Health and Wellness staff. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing work environment that promotes accountability, teamwork, and professional growth. Conduct performance evaluations, establish professional development plans, and address performance concerns in accordance with organizational policies. Ensure staff maintain required licensure, certifications, competencies, and continuing education requirements. Promote employee engagement, retention, succession planning, and leadership development within the department. Facilitate regular departmental meetings, interdisciplinary case conferences, and ongoing staff education. Quality, Compliance, and Risk Management (10-15%) Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, licensing requirements, accreditation standards, grant requirements, and organizational policies. Oversee quality assurance, quality improvement, infection prevention, risk management, and client safety initiatives. Monitor clinical quality indicators, client outcomes, regulatory compliance, and organizational performance metrics. Lead corrective action planning and continuous quality improvement activities. Ensure appropriate documentation, billing compliance, clinical record accuracy, and adherence to HIPAA and privacy standards. Collaborate with the Research, Evaluation, and Learning Department to evaluate program effectiveness and improve organizational performance. Clinical Practice (10-15%) Maintain an active but limited clinical practice, as organizational needs require, providing services within the scope of licensure. Conduct clinical assessments, examinations, diagnosis, treatment planning, and medication management, as applicable. Provide HIV prevention services, including PrEP and
PEP, HIV
specialty care, STI evaluation and treatment, chronic disease management, and other wellness services consistent with organizational programs and scope of practice. Support implementation of gender-affirming care, sexual health services, and evidence-based preventive care initiatives. Maintain payer credentialing and all clinical licensure necessary to support organizational operations. Provide clinical consultation and supervision consistent with professional licensure and applicable regulations. Research, Community Partnerships, and Organizational Leadership (5%) Promote collaboration with academic institutions, healthcare providers, community organizations, and public health partners. Support organizational research initiatives, implementation science, and quality improvement activities. Participate in grant monitoring visits, audits, accreditation reviews, and external stakeholder meetings. Represent the organization at professional conferences, community meetings, and healthcare collaborations. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education Doctoral degree (DNP, PhD, DrPH, or equivalent) preferred. Experience Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible healthcare leadership experience in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), FQHC Look-Alike, community health center, nonprofit healthcare organization, or similar integrated healthcare setting. Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience leading multidisciplinary clinical teams. Experience managing integrated medical, behavioral health, prevention, and wellness programs. Experience managing grant-funded healthcare programs and working with federal, state, local, and private funding sources. Demonstrated experience solving complex operational, staffing, and clinical service delivery challenges. Experience with strategic planning, program development, budgeting, and healthcare operations. Experience serving LGBTQ+ communities, people living with HIV, and historically underserved populations strongly preferred. Licenses/Certifications Current unrestricted independent clinical license in the District of Columbia and Maryland, at minimum, as a Medical Doctor (MD), Nurse Practitioner (NP) or other independently licensed healthcare professional approved by the organization. Ability to obtain licensure in the District of Columbia or Maryland within six months of hire. Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification, if applicable to professional licensure. Must be eligible for credentialing and enrollment with commercial insurance carriers, Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payers. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of integrated healthcare delivery models and interdisciplinary team-based care. Knowledge of HIV prevention, HIV treatment, sexual health and Hepatitis C as well as primary care and chronic disease management, and culturally responsive healthcare practices. Knowledge of healthcare regulations, quality improvement, infection prevention, risk management, and healthcare compliance. Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement, payer credentialing, grant management, and regulatory reporting. Strong leadership, strategic planning, operational management, budgeting, and workforce development skills. Excellent communication, collaboration, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills. Ability to analyze operational and financial data to support decision-making. Experience using electronic health records and healthcare technology platforms. Ability to develop policies, procedures, and operational workflows. Commitment to culturally responsive, trauma-informed, affirming, and client-centered care. Bilingual English/Spanish and/or other languages strongly preferred. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading integrated health programs serving LGBTQ+ communities and people living with HIV. Experience with HRSA, Ryan White, CDC, SAMHSA, or other federally funded healthcare programs. Experience implementing quality improvement and accreditation initiatives. Academic appointment, teaching experience, or participation in clinical research preferred. Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets the organization's insurance requirements. Physical Demands and Work Environment Work is performed in office, clinic, community, and mobile health settings. This position requires regular travel between organizational sites, partner organizations, community locations, and outreach events. The Director must be able to sit, stand, walk, use standard office and clinical equipment, communicate effectively with clients and staff, and occasionally lift or carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
