SUD/DETOX Location:
Cummington, MA, 01026 Purpose The Clinical Director provides leadership and oversight for all clinical services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care that is trauma-informed, patient-centered, culturally competent, and aligned with the full continuum of care. This role supervises clinical staff, fosters a collaborative multidisciplinary environment, and maintains ongoing communication with executive leadership, the Medical Director, and Utilization Review. The Clinical Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving clinical programs in accordance with ASAM Criteria and organizational standards, ensuring all documentation and care delivery meet regulatory, accreditation, and payer requirements. This position holds 24-hour accountability for clinical operations, patient safety, and quality outcomes, and ensures all services are provided in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as standards established by The Joint Commission and American Society of Addiction Medicine. The Clinical Director maintains final authority over patient care, clinical programming, service delivery, and adherence to clinical standards of care, ensuring all services align with evidence-based practices, ASAM Criteria, and organizational policies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Supervises all clinical staff members and activities, including group therapy, individual therapy, and documentation. Ensures initial and ongoing staff competency, including training, supervision, and annual performance evaluations in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Responsible for leading program policy and oversees quality of treatment. Coordinates with program administration. Works with Utilization Review Department to ensure clinical appropriateness of care including level-of-care determinations and payer compliance. Organizes professional development and training and ensures documentation and tracking of staff training, continuing education, and required certifications. Monitors and improves staff morale and team cohesion. Participates in recruitment and hiring. Maintains staff records and documentation. Conducts performance evaluations. Communicates key organizational updates. Coordinates staff coverage. Adheres to company philosophy and goals and ensures adherence to professional ethical standards and organizational code of conduct among clinical staff. Acts as a professional role model. Promotes teamwork. Manages attendance and leave. Sets and achieves goals. Maintains confidentiality and ensures patient rights are upheld and that patients have access to grievance processes without fear of retaliation. Maintains organizational structure and delegation. Leads multidisciplinary team meetings. Oversees all levels of care and ensures appropriate admission, continued stay, transfer, and discharge decisions consistent with ASAM Criteria. Implements Performance Improvement plans and utilizes data-driven outcomes, key performance indicators, and clinical metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and guide continuous quality improvement initiatives. Evaluates program quality and cost-effectiveness. Provides direct clinical services as needed. Oversees staff development and supervision and provides or ensures structured clinical supervision consistent with state regulatory requirements and best practices, including case consultation and review of clinical decision-making. Coordinates case management services and ensures continuity of care through effective discharge planning, referral coordination, and linkage to appropriate levels of care and community resources. Attends meetings. Develops staff schedules. Builds relationships with physicians and staff. Collaborates with leadership team. Ensures policy compliance and participates in the development, review, and revision of clinical policies and procedures to ensure alignment with regulatory, accreditation, and evidence-based standards. Ensures emergency preparedness knowledge and participates in emergency preparedness planning, training, and drills to ensure staff readiness and patient safety. Maintains staffing patterns. Ensures staff meet licensure requirements. Demonstrates adaptability. Follows Infection Control Guidelines. Reports incidents immediately and participates in incident review, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective action plans to reduce risk and improve patient safety. Maintains safe therapeutic environment to ensure implementation of trauma-informed care principles across all clinical services and staff interactions. Enforces disciplinary policies. Evaluates therapeutic interventions. Assists in patient care standards. Collaborates with medical staff and with the Medical Director to ensure integration of medical and clinical services and alignment of treatment practices. Evaluates patient care regularly and monitors patient response to treatment to improve care delivery and patient experience. Supervises all clinical activities. Ensures timely documentation. Ensures all clinical documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant with regulatory, accreditation, and payer requirements. Participates in treatment planning. Ensures completion, quality, and clinical appropriateness of biopsychosocial assessments, individualized treatment plans, and ongoing reassessments. Assigns staff appropriately. Protects patient privacy (HIPAA compliant). Limits PHI access appropriately. Reports privacy concerns without retaliation. Performs other duties assigned. Ensures compliance with all applicable state licensing requirements, scope of practice laws, and clinical supervision regulations. Preferred Knowledge and Training Required at Time of Hire Psychopathology and DSM diagnosis ASAM Criteria and levels of care Substance Use Disorder and Co-Occurring Disorders treatment Crisis intervention and risk assessment (suicide/homicide) Trauma-informed care principles Infection Control and HIPAA compliance Patient Rights and Ethical Standards Education and/or Work Experience Requirements Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related behavioral health field from an accredited institution. Minimum 3-5 years of clinical experience in behavioral health and/or substance use disorder treatment. Minimum 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role. Experience with Performance Improvement (PI), Utilization Review (UR), and accreditation standards, including The Joint Commission and ASAM. Demonstrated experience with evidence-based practices, co-occurring disorders, and multidisciplinary team leadership. Strong communication skills across all levels of staff and leadership. Experience in program development, policy implementation, and regulatory compliance.
Licensure / Certification
Active, unrestricted clinical license (LCSW, LPC, LMHC, LMFT, or equivalent) in the state of practice. Must meet clinical supervisory requirements as defined by applicable state licensing board(s).
Preferred:
Substance Use Disorder certification (CADC, LCDC, MAC, or equivalent). Current CPR/First Aid certification (or obtained within required timeframe). Physical and Mental Demands Ability to sit for extended periods while completing documentation and administrative tasks. Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the facility as needed. Occasional reaching, crouching, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift and carry light to moderate weight (up to 50 lbs) as needed. Ability to use hands and fingers for computer operation and documentation. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively. High level of critical thinking and clinical decision-making. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously. Ability to respond effectively in crisis and emergency situations. Ability to supervise, evaluate, and support clinical staff. Ability to maintain emotional stability in high-stress environments. Frequent interaction with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members. Ability to maintain focus, accuracy, and attention to detail. Ability to exercise sound judgment and ethical decision-making. Workplace Environment Position is required to work in a temperature-controlled environment; 80%-90% of time spent indoors. Potential exposure to emotionally distressed individuals. Potential exposure to airborne/blood-borne pathogens or other infectious materials. Potential exposure to workplace violence in a behavioral health setting.
