Job Description
Manager Surgical Services Business Reports to the Executive Director, Surgical Services. Manages the business aspects of the Surgical Services Division. Is instrumental in facilitating major systems changes and providing key data to support the Executive Director and Surgical Services Team, focusing on cost management objectives. Is responsible for developing, recommending and implementing strategies for cost containment and revenue maximization. Serves as a key link between Surgical Service staff, physicians, hospital administrators and other departments such as Finance and Materials Management, etc. of Beacon Health System. Manages the business aspects of the Surgical Services Division by: Assisting with the development of the Surgical Services annual budgets, (operating and capital budgets). Performing a key role in the procurement of capital equipment and in developing and implementing a system for divisional capital allocation. Developing and implementing a process to evaluate physician-specific procedural costs. Coordinating cost management activities with appropriate department personnel from the Surgical Services Division and other departments, along with physicians and hospital administrators, if appropriate. Preparing and submitting reports and statistics depicting the operations of the department, identifying and recommending both internal and external benchmarks. Provides recommendations and suggestions for both internal and external marketing of services. Manages activities dealing with revenue maximization. Includes developing a system to manage CMS Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding information and the periodic updates issued by Health Care Administration (HCA), vendor communication for coding verification and internal communications regarding charge master maintenance. Supporting and participating in cost management activities including but not limited to investigating, developing, recommending and implementing cost management strategies. Actively participates in periodic physical auditing of supplies and equipment in Major Surgery, Outpatient Surgery Center, and Sterile Processing. Maintains sufficient knowledge of the Surgical Services Information System and the Material Management Information System and external Programs (IE Tissue Tracking for regulatory tracking, Advisory Board Surgery Profitability Compass) to providing leadership and direction to support cost management and revenue enhancement objectives. Develops basic programs and reports depicting operations that will facilitate the management of business-related activities. Monitors projected revenue with volume trends. Researches support data, develops spreadsheets and graphs, and submits to Surgical Services Executive Director. Conferring, on a regular basis, with hospital-wide Materials Management Department to effect procurement of Surgical, Trauma Services department's materials and assuming responsibility for maintaining the environment of materials management areas within the operating room. Conferring, on a regular basis, with Beacon Health Finance Departments to achieve financial goals and objectives related to capital and operating budgets, and the charging and revenue capture of supplies and services for the Surgical, Trauma and Pulmonary Services departments. Supporting and participating in group purchasing and shared service efforts with other hospitals and related health facilities. Supports the Surgical Services Division's management team by: Supervises, assigns work to and evaluates the activities of department personnel performing business-related functions. Direct management responsibilities for the Charge Coordinators, and the Material Analysts for the management of surgical procedures supplies. Conducting ongoing staff education in relation to the cost of items and the acquisition of supplies and resources according to Hospital policies and procedures. Serving as a business resource/ consultant. Serves as a buffer between the Surgical Services Executive Director and sales personnel. Establishing and maintaining the appropriate professional and ethical relationships with vendor representatives. Maintains effective communication with management, divisional staff, medical staff and other hospital personnel. Meeting or exceeding standards of compliance of all the accreditation and regulatory bodies and commissions in relationship to non-clinical operating room area business management. Performing appropriate committee functions as assigned. Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by: Completing other job related assignments and special projects as directed.
