  • The Manager/Educator, in support and at the direction of the Director of Clinical Services, has 24/7 accountability and is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and clinical operations of the Emergency Department.
The manager supervises the work of the nursing staff, to include registered nurses (RNs), paramedics (NRP's), advanced ER techs (AEMT's), health unit coordinators (HUC's). The manager works to continually promote and sustain a high performing, professional, and efficient department while ensuring continuous quality care, patient and staff safety, and optimal patient access.
  • It is the responsibility of the Manager/Educator to provide high quality training and educational opportunities for NLH ED nursing staff in an effort to increase overall effectiveness while improving the quality and safety of patient The Manager/ Educator will work in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services, other managers/directors, educators, and members of the ED team to design education systems and provide learning in the areas of general and department-specific orientation; competency verification/training; regular in-services; quality improvement and process change initiatives.
Responsibilities To support the staff clinically, the ED Manager is knowledgeable in all PerformanceStandards/Expectations of the staff RN.
  • Communicate standards of care, regulatory requirements and hospital policies to staff and hold them accountable for compliance.
  • Evaluate staff and provide feedback and mentoring.
  • Complete staff evaluations and review with Director of Clinical Services as needed.
  • Inform the Director of Clinical Services when need arises to counsel employees for deficient practices and/or standards.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practice into the department. To ensure patient access is met in a cost-effective manner:
  • Manage the hiring process to ensure adequacy of staffing and hire appropriately.
  • Support the nursing and HUC schedulers in maintaining staffing Complete the advanced ER tech's schedule.
  • Oversee the department payroll with the support of the House Supervisors. Must review and do final approval at the end of each pay period. To support a patient centered environment:
  • Administer nursing care to patients, as needed, to maintain clinical skills.
  • Ensure quality and appropriateness of patient care. Facilitate and monitor activities related to the delivery of patient care, assuring evidence-based practice and nursing practice standards are achieved.
  • Continually assess processes, and adjust as needed, to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure all decision making has the patient as the focus.
  • Monitor patient satisfaction and make appropriate adjustments within the department. To provide a professional and safe environment for staff:
  • Engage staff in decision making and planning for the department.
  • Address concerns proactively, timely and effectively.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are current and evidenced based.
  • Maintain standards that align departmental practice with ENA (Emergency Nurses Association).
  • Ensure the environment is maintained appropriately (equipment in good repair, cleaned appropriately etc.). To ensure financial viability of the department:
  • Develop and maintain budgets for the Monitor revenues and expenses.
  • Monitor documentation for timeliness and adequacy while implementing changes as needed.
  • Monitor utilization of stocking and supply to ensure appropriate use and maintenance of products and equipment.
To adequately support the
Director of Clinical Services:
  • Provide input into short
  • and long-range department goals and objectives.
  • Perform other duties as requested. To ensure personal growth and development:
  • Proactively participate in self-appraisal and self-refkection.
  • Participate in educational opportunities.
  • Keep current in professional and leadership readings. Provides support to the hospital Emergency Responsiveness (Code Blue and Code Medical) Also, helps support Rapid Response
  • Works collaboratively with the Medical Director, nursing leadership, pharmacy and respiratory to ensure Code carts meet standards.
  • Works with nursing leaders and other leaders when new equipment, product and/or processes are added.
  • Supports Emergency Responsiveness of the organization. To ensure high quality care, the ED Manager/Educator oversees staff development, competency, andeducation within the department:
  • Facilitate educational programs for unit specific competencies.
  • Works collaboratively with HR and Education to ensure that appropriate courses are offered for staff competency.
  • Works collaboratively with key personnel to ensure adequacy of drills and training opportunities.
  • Responsible for keeping up general orientation with the assistance of unit preceptors.
  • Develops the training content with the input of the clinical team.
  • Ensures competency of all newly hired team members and supports the unit Preceptor Program.
  • Reviews evaluations of preceptors from trainees and provides coaching as necessary.
  • Supports the preceptor program, providing direction and feedback to them to ensure unit specific orientation is highly effective.
  • Collaborative approach when gaps in Preceptor performance exist.
  • Provides and leads a robust & diverse educational program for nursing staff which aligns with evidenced based practice and regulatory Solicits information and data regarding nursing education needs through multiple modalities.
  • Plans and helps organize scheduled and unscheduled medical emergency drills and simulations
  • Provide information to ED staff related to supplemental training opportunities through ENA, Elsevier and other resources.
  • Promotes and helps organize the nursing clinical requirements for annual mandatory training to comply with CMS/CAH regulations.
  • Oversees preceptors of the new graduate RN program: one-on-one involvement periodic needs assessments.
  • Follows up with new hires on completion of independent studies/assignment. Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • BSN required or currently enrolled in an accredited BSN program.
  • Masters in nursing preferred
  • Certification in specialty encouraged and supported
  • 3-5 years relevant clinical experience
  • Prior leadership experience preferred
  • Ability to make effective presentations and facilitate
  • Demonstrated skills in nursing expertise, team leadership, leading educational initiatives and project management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with all levels of
