I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
George Washington University Division of University Advancement (UA) and the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), Milken Institute School of Public Health (MSPH) and the School of Nursing (SON) together are seeking an Associate Vice President, Health and Medicine.
UA is responsible for leading the university's alumni and fundraising efforts. SMHS is the 11th oldest medical school in the country and the first in the nation's capital. Since its establishment, the school has been at the forefront of medical education and has grown to include highly-ranked programs in the health and biomedical sciences. This position is an integral component to achieving aspirational fundraising goals.
Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, this position is the chief development officer for Health and Medicine.
The H/M are comprised of:
School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), the Milken Institute School of Public Health (MSPH) and the School of Nursing (SON) in the health enterprise, Medical Faculty Associates (the physician faculty practice plan), and the GW Hospital in the medical enterprise. The AVP is primarily responsible and accountable for H/M philanthropy. The AVP serves on the executive leadership teams of each of the Schools. The AVP leads and manages the H/M development team in an environment of rapid change and growth while preparing for a GWU major comprehensive campaign.
The AVP reports to the Vice President, University Advancement and is a senior member of the UA leadership team. The AVP partners with UA colleagues and programs to achieve a highly productive and efficient fundraising environment.
Provides executive leadership and strategic direction to the H/M philanthropy staff and work effectively with H/M Deans and DAR peers/partners. The team consists of approximately 24.0 FTE in the School of Medicine and heads of development for the Schools of Public Health and Nursing who supervise teams of 3.0 FTE and 1.0 FTE respectively. Assumes responsibility for implementing a comprehensive philanthropy plan for the H/M to significantly increase philanthropy. Works with GWU UA and H/M leadership to create and implement workplans in critical program areas guided by timelines, measurable objectives, and dashboards,
Creates and sustains productive and high-morale development organizations for SMHS, MSPH, and SON.
Builds upon a preliminary case for philanthropic support and fundraising opportunities for the entities comprising the H/M
Builds and implements a prospective donor pipeline for major and principal gifts, including alumni, grateful patients, community leaders, and corporate/foundations.
Utilizes proven and innovative strategies and tactics to engage H/M faculty leaders, including the MFA clinical physicians whose service lines and patients hold the greatest potential for philanthropy.
Works a portfolio of major and principal gift donor prospects and leads by example.
Oversees the major/principal gifts program, including portfolio review, assignments, proposal development, and donor relations; and the programs of H/M alumni relations, alumni fundraising, corporate/foundation fundraising, grateful patient programming, and faculty relations
Leads and actively manages cultural change in the current H/M development office to ensure attitudes and behaviors support a productive and high- morale environment.
Collaborates with University Advancement peers to formally partner on Principal and Planned Gifts, Information Management, Research and Relations Management, Stewardship, Campaign Planning, and effective engagement of the University President, VP UA, and other University executives.
Creates a robust grateful patient program by working with the leadership of the schools, their respective clinical teams and the MFA, as well as engaging the leadership of GW Hospital (privately-owned). The grateful patient program is expected to include facilitated access for key patients, seamless and compliant patient information management, marketing to current and prospective patients who are alumni and residents of the region.
Grows philanthropy for H/M faculty who conduct research, especially in the GW Cancer Institute and MSPH.
Helps ensure alignment with overarching UA strategies, objectives and culture in preparation and implementation of a comprehensive campaign.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, Master's degree, or higher, in a relevant area of study preferred. Relevant experience must include at least 4 years of senior leadership/executive level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Undergraduate degree with preference for a graduate degree.
Ten plus years of fundraising experience in Medical and Health settings.
Proven leadership in a complex environment and success with productive fundraising teams, major gifts pipeline development, proposal development, and collaboration with peers.
Successful experience in relationship building and fundraising activity with Deans, Academic Medical leadership, and physician faculty.
Notable fundraising at the six- and seven-figure levels with a personal donor portfolio, in teams, and in collaboration with development officers who have central and school-based duties.
History of successful project management toward specific objectives, deliverables, and milestones.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Demonstrated excellent integrity, maturity, judgment, and collegiality in complicated settings currently undergoing significant change culturally, organizationally, and programmatically.
Ability to work independently and involve leadership as required.
Ability to travel locally and nationally when necessary and to work on occasional nights and weekends
Hiring Range $163,373.07 - $342,975.11
