JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of a higher classified employee, administers vision and hearing tests to infants, toddlers, pre-school, school age and special needs children at schools, preschools and other locations in Washtenaw County. Identifies individuals with actual or potential deficiencies, makes referrals, and follows up on treatment plans. Initially under close supervision, employees gradually receive moreplex assignments and work more independently as experience is gained. Employees may advance to
LEVEL II
after gaining the required experience and demonstrating acceptable work proficiency.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties:
Conducts preliminary audiometric testing of school and pre-school children, infants & toddlers, special needs students, and teacher or parent referrals. Using an audiometer, conducts threshold audiometric testing and simultaneously prepares an audiogram for those individuals not passing preliminary testing as well as for physician and school referrals. Uses a variety of specialized equipment such as a Telebinocular vision tester, Pediatric junior screener, and alternate screening procedures to test the vision of pre-school and school age children including special education students. Tests school and pre-school children including special education students for visual defects including visual acuity, hyperopia, eye muscle imbalance and observable symptoms. Tests for color vision on referral. Records and evaluates results of tests and screenings, making referrals and rmendations for children with apparent problems to otology clinic, opthamologists and physicians as necessary, forwarding copies of test. Retests as necessary to verify findings. Instructs and prepares children in the classroom or small groups to gain cooperation and understanding of test procedures and to allay fears of testing procedures and equipment. Interacts and develops rapport with children to achieve consistent testing results. Schedules,anizes and works in the monthly otology clinic. Confers with school nurses, parents and teachers concerning problems of children tested in reference to special seating or other means of alleviating problem. Schedules time and obtains space necessary for screening programs in schools, day care centers and other locations. Organizes and distributes written materials and class lists, and works with teachers and staff to make specific appointments. Transports equipment and supplies to testing locations, sets up, tests, and adjusts equipment. Maintains and prepares statistics and reports of tests for use at local, regional and state levels. Provides follow-up for those children identified as possibly having vision/hearing problems at time of last screening. Assists other members of screening staff as needed in maintenance of records and other duties. Interprets test results, policies & procedures or the program to parents and teachers. Provides information and answers questions for parents of children with possible hearing, vision or developmental problems. Responsible for ordering and maintaining needed forms, equipment and supplies. Obtains qualified repairs when needed. Provides information and referrals for Washtenaw County Human Services programs and outside agencies (e.g., Lions Club, CSHCS, Protective Services). Leads and facilitates regular staff meetings which include the Program Coordinator tomunicate activities, problems and results. Serves on variousmittees and participates in training programs and inservices. Performs other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including aputer, vision to read ed materials and a VDT screen and hearing and speech sufficient tomunicate in person or over the telephone. Must be able to transport screening equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Must have normal hearing in at least one ear. 20/20 vision is desirable, at least 20/30 vision with or without glasses at near point, 3-feet and 20-feet is required. These requirements may be amodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such amodations.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Effectivemunication andanizational skills. Experience working with children. Skill in: Effective problem solving and decision making skills with a high degree of accuracy. Interacting with children and adults in an effective and positive manner. Ability to work well with children. Working cooperatively in a team environment. EDUCATION
Possession of a high school diploma or the equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
A minimum of six (6) months experience working with the public, preferably including working with children. Six month break-in period.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Satisfactorypletion of the Michigan Department of Public Health's hearing and vision screening training program within two (2) months after hire date. Training is offered once a year in the fall. Satisfactorypletion of mentioned training within specified time period necessary to retain position. Possession of a Michigan Driver's License and use of a vehicle during work hours required.
