Job Description

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology is recognized as a leading clinical and research center for audiology and cochlear implantation, balance and facial nerve disorders, head and neck cancer, sleep disorders, and other specialties. Combining expert and compassionate care with state-of-the-art medical resources, UT Southwestern offers accurate diagnostic services and effective treatments that make an important difference in patients' lives. The UT Southwestern, Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Communicative and Vestibular Disorders offers a 12-month externship for audiology graduate students. The program begins the first of June 2027 and concludes the end of May 2028.
  • Subsequent to the execution of a letter of Agreement with Parkland Hospital and Childrens Medical Center, Externs will have two 6 month placements, with one giving more focus to adult services at UTSW clinic/Parkland and the other giving more focus to pediatric services at Childrens Medical Center.
There is a cross-over during each rotation to maintain skills for all age groups. In addition to the detailed services provided at each site, the extern will have rotations in ORABR, clinic ABR, and Parkland Newborn Nursery. Externs will have an opportunity to observe a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehabilitation, as well as observation in the Family Focused Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children. Audiologists at UT Southwestern provide services at multiple clinics: UTSW West Campus clinic (an outpatient facility for primarily adult services), UT Southwestern Frisco (an outpatient facility for pediatrics and adults), and Moncrief Medical Center at Fort Worth (an outpatient facility for primarily adult services), Children's Medical Center (main hospital/outpatient clinic in Dallas, Legacy outpatient clinic in Plano, Perot outpatient clinic in Dallas, and Prosper outpatient clinic), Parkland Memorial Hospital (outpatient clinic/inpatient care for adults and Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program), and Clements University Hospital. We provide a wide range of services including diagnostic audiometric evaluations, vestibular examinations, electrophysiological testing, amplification, tinnitus/hyperacusis, bone anchored hearing implants, cochlear and auditory brainstem implant services, and newborn hearing screening. We work with all age groups, from newborns to adults.   • Successful applicants must secure the required executed affiliation agreements to participate in rotations at Parkland Hospital and Children's Medical Center.
Depending on institutional requirements, this may be accomplished through separate Letters of Agreement with each facility or through an approved Tri-Party Agreement encompassing all participating parties .

Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: This externship is very comprehensive and will require some baseline skills, as well as initiative to learn and improve over the course of the year.
  • Baseline skills on audiometric exams for adults and children
  • Baseline skills on counseling and fitting of hearing devices
  • Baseline skills on a wide variety of additional specialty services, such as cochlear implant, ABR, OAE and newborn screenings.
Depending on your clinical training up to this point, and if baseline skills are not present, it will be expected that you have reviewed educational materials in that area to have a set of knowledge to expedite your learning. Equally important to baseline skills, an appropriate candidate should be reliable, organized and flexible. They should exhibit a strong work ethic, professionalism and strong initiative to master clinical skills. Critical thinking and the ability to synthesize information is required. Interpersonally, an appropriate candidate should demonstrate kindness, patience and the ability to assimilate with a large team of nearly 40 audiologists. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Clinical Externs should demonstrate significant growth in all areas of Audiology, to include:
  • Audiometric exams for adults and children, to include audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, and OAE
  • Vestibular examination, to include VNG, VHT, rotary chair, VEMP, ECoG and platform posturography
  • Electrophysiology, to include diagnostic ABR threshold ABR and ASSR
  • Hearing Aid selection and fitting, to include a wide variety of brands and full use of REM
  • Implantable device selection and fitting to include cochlear implant and BAHA
