Full Job Description General Purpose:

The Histotechnician III performs a variety of technical procedures that result in the preparation of slides necessary for the Pathologist to make a diagnosis from a patient's tissue sample.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Embedding

• Embedding patient's tissue samples in paraffin molds. Microtomy
• Producing high quality microscopic slides from patient's tissue samples. Special Staining techniques
• includes routine H&E, Special Stains, and Immunohistochemistry Reagent Preparation
• Making up of chemical solutions for any area in the Histology Lab as needed. Hazardous Waste Regulations and disposal. Safety.

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for production of Routine and Special Histology techniques. Block and slide filing. Maintain integrity of patient specimens at all times, with a high level of accuracy. Responsible for maintaining the necessary levels of confidentiality. Responsible for maintaining effective communication between co-workers and management. Exercises good judgment in conflict resolution. Responsible for following all quality and regulatory standards required to perform tasks. Maintain a clean workplace. Demonstrate initiative, dependability, cooperation and diplomacy in all situations in order to maintain a high standard of customer service to the patient. Other duties as assigned or requested.

Supervisor Duties:

No supervisory duties.

Job Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of all Histology procedures

• embedding, microtomy, tissue processing, fixation, decalcification, routine H&E, special stains and Immunohistochemistry staining.

Solid understanding of operation and maintenance of all Histology Laboratory equipment. Ability to consistently provide accurate work and to pay close attention to detail. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments or refer to appropriate sources for repairs. Excellent communication skills with co-workers, management, and the public. Ability to maintain the necessary levels of confidentiality. Education/Experience Associate degree in laboratory science or 60 semester hours including 24 semester hrs of medical lab technology; or, 60 semester hrs including 24 hrs of science that includes 6 hrs chemistry, 6 hrs biology, and 12 hrs chemistry, biology or, medical lab tech in any combination and laboratory training that includes either: completion of a clinical lab training program or 3 months training in each specialty in which high complexity testing is performed HT or HTL (ASCP) certification Active Florida State Histology license

Work Environment:

Must be able to sustain normal exposures to common Histology Laboratory environment. Must be tolerate of facemasks, gloves, unpleasant odors, and commonly used solvents, ie; Xylene, alcohols, Formalin and other chemicals commonly used in Histology Laboratories. Handling of hazardous waste materials.

Material and Equipment Directly Used:

Tissue Processors, Embedding Centers, Microtome's, Chemical Recyclers, Chemicals, Dyes, Scales, Microscope, Hot plate, Misc. Stainers (H&E, Special, IHC,).

Physical Activities:

Requires a full range of body motion, including manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Moderate physical activity

• walking, standing, or sitting in one place for prolonged periods of time.

With the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
