Job Information Exemption Status:
Non-Exempt A Brief Overview Responsible for producing consistent and high-quality tissue blocks and slides. Assists pathologist/pathologist assistants in gross sectioning of tissues. Works with pathologists and other members of the healthcare and laboratory team to provide high quality laboratory results while upholding the Stormont Vail Tenets of compassion, patient safety, privacy, and improving the health of our community. Education Qualifications High School Diploma / GED Required Experience Qualifications 1 year Hospital pathology lab experience. Preferred Skills and Abilities Follows all applicable OSHA guidelines. Follows all hospital and departmental safety procedures. (Required proficiency) Ability to organize work and establish priorities. (Required proficiency) Strong attention to detail. (Required proficiency) Ability to follow directions accurately. (Required proficiency) Working knowledge of basic medical terminology and human anatomy. (Preferred proficiency) Strong written and verbal communication. (Required proficiency) Licenses and Certifications Histotechnician - ASCP Histotechnologist also accepted. Must obtain ASCP certification (HT or HTL). Required What you will do Prepares histologic slides per established procedures for the Pathologist, to include tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, mounting, staining and cover slipping. Understands the theory of histologic stains. Performs routine stains, special stains and IHC stains as requested by the Pathologist. Prepares and maintain solutions and stains. Effectively troubleshoots stain quality. Understands operations of analytical equipment and stainers. Troubleshoots equipment effectively. Performs and documents quality control and preventative maintenance. Maintains supply levels using cost-effective inventory control. Develops validation protocols. Performs and documents validations, quality control, and maintenance logs. Assists with teaching, training and mentoring interns and trainees in the department. Assists department leadership in ensuring quality operations of the department. Writes and reviews procedures. Discards waste materials safety and maintains required documentation per protocol. Files paraffin blocks, stained tissue slides and maintains files. Initiates and participate in process improvement projects.
