Job Description

Glenwood is seeking Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to work in our residential services programs supporting children and adults with dual diagnoses, including intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) alongside mental health conditions (MI). In this role, DSPs help individuals build skills, maintain stability, and improve their quality of life through consistent, person-centered support. DSPs provide care in a safe, respectful, and professional manner while contributing to a structured, supportive environment. Responsibilities include assisting with daily living skills, supporting behavioral and mental health needs, and encouraging participation in meaningful activities. We offer a variety of shifts, including 8- to 12-hour day, overnight, and weekend schedules.
PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide person-centered care to children and adults, following each individual's Individual Plan of Care (IPC), behavior support plans and clinical recommendations. Support emotional and behavioral stability by utilizing trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and positive behavior supports, ensuring therapeutic, non-aversive interactions at all times. Monitor and respond to mental health needs, including observing changes in mood, behavior, or functioning, and promptly reporting concerns to clinical and supervisory staff. Promote independence and skill development by assisting individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, eating, and mobility, while encouraging maximum participation and choice. Provide safe supervision and crisis response, implementing approved crisis prevention and intervention strategies (e.g., MCS or equivalent) to maintain the safety of individuals and staff. Facilitate community integration and engagement, including transporting and accompanying individuals to school, appointments, therapy sessions, and recreational activities that support socialization and recovery. Document services and behaviors accurately and timely, including daily progress notes, incident reports, and data collection for behavioral and clinical tracking. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including clinicians, nurses, therapists, educators, and families/guardians, to support holistic care and treatment outcomes. Support daily living and household operations, including light housekeeping, meal preparation, and maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. Model professionalism and compassion, maintaining appropriate boundaries, cultural sensitivity, and respect for the dignity and rights of all individuals served.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to work in a group home, home-like setting. Ability to communicate (verbally and written) with all levels of personnel, internal and external to the company. Ability to handle physical aspects of the job, including bending High school degree/GED equivalent required Valid Alabama driver's license - insurable through the agency's insurance carrier Clearance through the Dept. of Human Resources Child/Adult Abuse & Neglect and pass all required pre-employment and background screening CPR and First Aid, Managing Crisis Safety (MCS), and Medication Administration Certified within the first 30 days Glenwood is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace.
