Life Skills Coach / Direct Support Professional Part-Time | $29/hour | 15-20 hours per week | Flexible Schedule | Gaithersburg, MD Looking for a meaningful part-time job that works around your college schedule? This is much more than a job—it's an opportunity to make a lasting difference while gaining valuable, real-world experience. We are seeking a compassionate, energetic college student or professional to become a Life Skills Coach for Chris, a friendly 39-year-old man with Down syndrome who lives independently with two roommates in Gaithersburg through Maryland's Community Pathways Self-Directed Services. Chris is working toward greater independence and is looking for someone who enjoys teaching, encouraging, exploring the community, and building a genuine relationship. Every day is different, and your role is to help him continue developing the confidence and skills needed to live his best life. This position is especially valuable for students pursuing careers in: Special Education Occupational Therapy Physical Therapy Speech-Language Pathology Nursing Psychology Social Work Human Services Therapeutic Recreation Pre-Med or other healthcare professions You'll gain hands-on experience supporting independence, communication, community inclusion, and person-centered planning—experience that looks outstanding on a résumé or graduate school application. What You'll Do As Chris's Life Skills Coach, you'll mentor, encourage, and support him as he develops everyday living skills and enjoys being an active member of his community.
Activities include:
Teaching cooking, meal planning, grocery shopping, laundry, and household organization Supporting communication and social interactions Accompanying Chris to physical therapy appointments Exploring the community together, including bowling, swimming, movies, libraries, bookstores, parks, and local events Helping him build confidence using public transportation between Gaithersburg and Rockville Encouraging the appropriate use of his iPhone for music, FaceTime with family, and exploring his interests Chris enjoys walking, swimming, music, theater, Disney, Marvel, bowling, and trying new activities. If you share any of these interests, that's a bonus! Training & Support You won't be expected to jump in alone. You'll receive paid training while shadowing experienced staff so you can learn Chris's routines, communication style, goals, and the expectations of the position before working independently. Qualifications We're looking for someone who is: Kind, patient, dependable, and enthusiastic Interested in helping someone become more independent A strong communicator who enjoys teaching and mentoring Comfortable working with someone who has limited expressive language At least 18 years old Able to pass a background check CPR and First Aid certified (or willing to obtain certification before employment-will be reimbursed for cost of class) Has a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and a clean driving record (mileage reimbursed) Experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities is helpful but not required if you have the right attitude and a willingness to learn.
