This position supports animal well-being and guest experience through compassionate counseling, accurate data management, and excellent customer service. Advisors also contribute to shelter operations by supporting enrichment, workflow, and care routines, while fostering positive relationships with adopters, volunteers, and team members. With flexibility across locations and duties, the Pathways Advisor ensures each animal receives thoughtful advocacy and each guest receives a welcoming, informative experience. Responsibilities
- Demonstrate professionalism and dedication by maintaining consistent, on-time attendance to support team operations and ensure reliable departmental coverage.
- Provide exceptional, personalized service with warmth and empathy to make every guest feel valued, build trust, and foster a welcoming atmosphere that encourages ongoing community support.
- Maintain efficient guest flow and overall productivity by delivering timely service, completing downtime tasks, and performing opening and closing duties to support smooth daily operations.
- Demonstrate adaptability by traveling between all adoption sites as needed, adjusting to varying team dynamics and protocols while delivering consistent, high-quality service.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and clear reporting to support daily operations, informed decision-making, compliance, and organizational transparency.
- Maintain timely, organized, and professional communication across platforms to support coordination, customer service, and efficient shelter operations.
- Participate in monthly one-on-one meetings with a Lead Pathways Advisor to review performance, set goals, address challenges, and support ongoing growth and team alignment.
- Support shelter operations by assisting other departments and completing assigned tasks with adaptability, collaboration, and a positive, goal-oriented attitude.
- Demonstrate safe, compassionate handling and a foundational understanding of animal behavior to ensure positive, compliant care and interactions for pets and people.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment by performing daily sanitation, providing compassionate routine care, administering medications as directed, and reporting health or behavior concerns promptly.
- Deliver daily tailored enrichment activities and interactions to shelter pets, observing and documenting responses to support their well-being and behavioral growth.
- Engage one-on-one with shelter pets to enhance their quality of life by teaching commands, reinforcing positive behaviors, and collaborating with the Behavior Team to support individual needs and adoptability.
- Keep pet profiles and kennel cards accurately updated in ShelterLuv, including medical, behavior, and adoption info, and complete the "5 Things for Getting to Know Your Future Pet" to aid adopters.
- Assess each dog's leash-walking behavior to assign walking levels, label their status clearly, and ensure safe, positive experiences for dogs and volunteers.
- Support volunteers by guiding safe dog handling, helping select appropriate dogs, and offering leash-ups, route, and behavior tips to foster positive experiences and collaborative care.
- Provide adopters with transparent information about each animal's history, behavior, and health, ensuring informed decisions and successful, responsible pet placements through clear communication and ongoing support.
- Conduct follow-up calls with recent adopters to support pet adjustment, address questions, document feedback, and relay concerns to ensure lasting success and strong relationships.
- Represent the organization professionally at local community adoption events, using strong animal handling skills to ensure safety, adapt to dynamic settings, and promote successful adoptions.
- Scan stray pets for microchips, assist in owner identification, coordinate intake with management, and ensure prompt, compassionate handling to reunite or rehome them.
- Schedule admission appointments for Owner Surrenders and Strays with empathy and efficiency, providing supportive customer service and accurate documentation during sensitive interactions.
- Assist with the handling of pets during intake appointments as needed.
Job Conditions This position requires working in a fast-paced, emotionally dynamic shelter environment with regular exposure to animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions. Team members must be comfortable standing, walking, bending, lifting to 50 pounds, and working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The role involves direct interaction with the public and animals, requiring emotional resilience, adaptability, and strong communication skills. Team members must also be able to manage the emotional impact of humane euthanasia decisions and procedures with compassion and professionalism. Weekend, holiday, and evening availability may be required as part of a rotating schedule. Job Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. At least one year of experience in animal care, customer service, or a related field preferred. Experience in a shelter, veterinary, or nonprofit environment is a plus. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to providing empathetic, nonjudgmental customer service. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment while also being self-motivated and proactive. Basic computer literacy and comfort navigating multiple communication platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, email). Willingness and ability to learn animal handling, enrichment, behavior, and sheltering best practices. Must be comfortable working around animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions. Ability to stay calm and make sound decisions in emotionally charged or high-pressure situations. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required for travel between sites and off-site events. Animal Humane prohibits the possession, use or distribution of alcohol, cannabis, and unlawful illicit drugs by employees on Animal Humane's site and/or while doing business for Animal Humane.
