Job Description

Hempfield Behavioral Health Red Tomato Farm & Inn is a Day and Prevocational Program to provide adults with intellectual disabilities meaningful work rooted in farm tasks that create opportunities to interact with the general public and community. With day and pre-vocational programming, we are able to serve a wide population of participants. Our 5-acre parcel of farm land, includes a program building with kitchen and woodworking area, barn and pastures, a greenhouse and raised garden beds and a farm house, which serves as our bed and breakfast and is open to the public. Participants interact with our farm animals, work in our gardens, participate in grounds maintenance, cook in our kitchen and complete various woodworking projects daily on our farm. Job Description
  • Farm Associate (DSP)
Purpose:
The purpose of the Farm Associate is to advance participant's prevocational skills through teaching farm tasks such as: animal care, gardening, craft projects, baking/cooking projects, and community service activities. The Farm Associate also performs basic farm agriculture and livestock duties.
Education Requirements:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Some experience working in agriculture and with persons with intellectual disabilities is preferred.
Other Requirements:
Valid PA driver's license with a good driving record and no restrictions, clean Childline, PA State Police, and FBI Clearances, current physical (within the last 12 months) and negative and up to date and TB/Mantoux Test, successful completion of required trainings within specified time frames, and successful completion of pre-employment process.
Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to safely operate vehicles Physical stamina to work at a minimum of Medium Physical Demand Capacity (standing and/or walking six hours out of an eight hour day with occasional lifting of 50 pounds and frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds) Physical ability to squat, kneel, bend and reach frequently Physical ability to negotiate stairs/ramps
Job Duties:
Assisting with prevocational skills during assigned groups Complete assigned farm tasks daily Complete assigned livestock tasks daily Administer medications, perform CPR, or First Aid Keeping participants free from abuse and neglect
  • the Farm Associate promotes the civil rights, citizenship, and full community participation for participants, while keeping them free from harm or mistreatment.
Maintain confidentiality of the participants served according to the provisions of the HIPPA and Pennsylvania state law and regulations Use appropriate first aid/safety procedures when responding to or preventing emergencies Contribute to ISP plan development, implementation, and review Attend ISP plan meetings Follow the unusual incident report process and protocol Follow the mandated reporting process and protocol Follow the assaultive client process and protocol Follow the emergency action plan Care for farm animals as assigned

  • Anything else assigned by program coordinator Complete the daily schedule for assigned group including: barn work, gardening/greenhouse, sensory, crafts, recreation, relaxation, outings, volunteering Collect materials for daily schedule Supervise assigned groups using frequent praise for participation and ignore, if possible, off task behavior Report any equipment or facility problems immediately to program coordinator Complete daily progress notes on each assigned participant, reporting on each activity throughout the day Participate in morning and afternoon meetings, trainings, clean up, etc Participate in staff trainings Participate in fire drills Complete any other tasks as assigned by program coordinator
