Job Description

Direct Support Professional (DSP) Job Overview We are seeking dependable, compassionate, and dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to provide support to individuals with disabilities or special needs during 1st and 2nd shifts. This role is essential to the overall success of the program by ensuring individuals receive quality care, supervision, and assistance with daily living activities in a safe, supportive, and person-centered environment. DSPs are responsible for supporting individuals with varying levels of need, including some who may exhibit high-intensity or challenging behaviors. Staff must be able to implement behavior support strategies, maintain a calm and professional demeanor during behavioral incidents, and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals while promoting dignity, respect, and independence. Candidates must be able to work independently, communicate effectively, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately to individual needs, behavioral situations, and emergencies. The ideal candidate is patient, reliable, flexible, and committed to providing high-quality support that enhances each individual's quality of life. Shifts vary based on residence needs and may include:
  • All candidates are expected to be available to work all shift timeframes based on our member's and scheduling needs. 1st Shift 7:00 AM
  • 3:00 PM 8:00 AM
  • 4:00 PM 2nd Shift 3:00 PM
  • 11:00 PM 4:00 PM
  • 12:00 AM Key Responsibilities
  • Provide supervision and support in accordance with individualized service plans.
  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation as needed.
  • Support individuals in developing independence, social skills, and community involvement.
  • Monitor for changes in behavior or health and respond appropriately.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment.
  • Complete housekeeping tasks such as laundry, washing dishes, and maintaining common areas.
  • Prepare meals, snacks, lunches, and other items as needed during the shift.
  • Transport individuals to appointments, activities, or community outings as assigned.
  • Review and complete communication logs, documenting all shift activity and incidents accurately.
  • Communicate clearly with incoming staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Follow all safety procedures and report Serious Incidents per policy.
  • Ensure all assigned tasks are completed prior to shift end to support efficient staff transitions. Qualifications
  • Experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities (or willingness to train).
  • Ability to work independently and remain attentive throughout the shift.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Compassionate, reliable, and able to handle emergencies effectively.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word/Excel).
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Requirements
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • MANDT or TOVA training (or willingness to obtain).
  • TB test required.
  • Completion of DSP Orientation and all required ongoing trainings.
  • Must pass DBHDS and Central Registry Background checks in accordance with 1 2 VAC §37.
