Job Summary Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is hiring for a part-time Lab Assistant I in the Physical Sciences department. The Lab Assistant I provides routine operational support for academic science laboratories.

  • Prepares laboratory materials, equipment, and supplies for instructional activities. Sets up, replenishes, and breaks down laboratory experiments according to established procedures and staff direction. Checks laboratory rooms between classes and helps maintain instruction-ready conditions. 25%
  • Cleans, sorts, and stores laboratory glassware, equipment, and reusable materials. Cleans and organizes laboratory work areas, carts, storage areas, and shared spaces. Assists with periodic deep cleaning and semester startup or shutdown activities. 20%
  • Performs routine laboratory and safety inspections using established checklists. Checks equipment for cleanliness, proper storage, and basic operation. Reports damaged equipment, missing supplies, spills, unsafe conditions, and other concerns to laboratory staff. Performs basic equipment cleaning and routine maintenance when trained and authorized. 15%
  • Assists with inventory, restocking, labeling, and organizing laboratory supplies and equipment. Reports low stock levels and inventory discrepancies. Transports supplies, equipment, and prepared materials between laboratories, storage areas, and preparation spaces. 10%
  • Assists Lab Technicians and other laboratory staff with routine laboratory operations and other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Desired Qualifications Prior coursework in chemistry, biology, physics, or another laboratory science Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment, glassware, and safe laboratory practices Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures, checklists, and instructions Effective communication and teamwork skills, including promptly reporting problems or unsafe conditions Basic computer skills, including email, spreadsheets, and routine electronic recordkeeping. Previous customer service experience Special Working Conditions Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and moving between laboratory spaces. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, lab coats, and closed-toe shoes. May handle broken glass, contaminated materials, or other laboratory waste after appropriate training. Employees may be tasked with unloading and/or loading heavy materials (up to 25 pounds) with or without reasonable accommodation.
