Job Title:
Sample Management Specialist Job Description The Sample Management Specialist works in a high-volume, production-based clinical laboratory environment and performs a vital component of clinical lab science. This role focuses on receiving, tracking, and preparing clinical specimens for testing while ensuring accuracy, safety, and timely processing. The specialist will locate and resolve issues with missing samples, support laboratory operations through careful data entry and equipment upkeep, and consistently follow established procedures to maintain quality and compliance. Responsibilities Receive and sort incoming clinical laboratory specimens in a high-volume production environment. Prepare specimens for testing and analysis, including sample handling, sample prep, aliquoting, and pipetting as needed. Scan and enter specimen and patient information accurately into laboratory systems. Ensure all laboratory equipment is functioning properly and perform minor instrumentation maintenance as required. Troubleshoot specimen-related issues, including labeling, identification, and processing discrepancies. Locate missing samples within the laboratory area, around instrumentation and analyzers, and in walk-in refrigerators and walk-in freezers. Track missing samples, determine the root cause of issues, resolve sample discrepancies, and report appropriate problem codes. Replenish test bench and workstation supplies to support continuous laboratory operations. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with laboratory standards. Complete record logs and other administrative documentation accurately and in a timely manner. Follow all Standard Operating Procedures to ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Prioritize tasks and manage multiple assignments while meeting established turnaround times. Communicate clearly with team members and other laboratory staff to coordinate specimen tracking and issue resolution. Document findings and actions taken when resolving sample-related issues using clear, well-written communication. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent. Previous medical, laboratory, or production experience (preferred). Experience working in a laboratory setting, particularly in sample receiving, sample handling, and processing specimens (preferred). Comfort with handling biological specimens in a clinical lab environment. Ability to accurately identify and verify specimens. Basic computer proficiency and data entry skills, including use of Microsoft Office. High level of attention to detail with strong ability to prioritize and multitask. Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills for resolving specimen issues. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce clear documentation. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment and meet established turnaround times. Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to perform long periods of standing and walking to track specimens throughout the lab. Ability to work in multi-temperature environments, including walk-in refrigerators and freezers, for extended periods. Must pass a standardized color blindness test. Flexibility to work overtime as needed. Self-initiated, proactive approach with a strong team-oriented mindset. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with chemistry-related laboratory processes is beneficial. Familiarity with aliquoting and pipetting techniques. Working knowledge of general laboratory practices and safety procedures. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for basic documentation and reporting. Demonstrated ability to maintain well-organized, well-written documentation. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse laboratory team. Demonstrated reliability and consistency in meeting production and quality expectations. Work Environment This role is based in a large diagnostic laboratory that operates in a high-volume, production-driven setting. The schedule for this position typically runs Tuesday through Saturday with a 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. start time, and training occurs on the assigned shift. The end time would be 6p or 7p. It would be an 8 our shift between the hours of 9a-7p. The work involves regular exposure to biological specimens and requires frequent movement throughout the lab, including long periods of standing and walking to track specimens. The Sample Management Specialist works around laboratory instrumentation, analyzers, and in multi-temperature environments such as walk-in refrigerators and freezers. The environment is fast-paced and quality-focused, with an emphasis on meeting turnaround times while following Standard Operating Procedures and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized workspace. Standard laboratory attire and appropriate personal protective equipment are required to ensure safety and compliance. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $17.50/hr.
