CMT Lab Technician Job Description This role focuses on supporting construction materials testing (CMT) in both laboratory and field settings. You will prepare and test soil, rock, and concrete materials, assist certified lab technicians, and help ensure accurate, reliable test data for project engineers. This position is well suited for individuals who enjoy hands-on work, are comfortable in a physically demanding environment, and are interested in developing their skills through formal lab certification training. Responsibilities Ability to safely load and unload field trucks and lift up to 50 pounds. Comfort performing physical labor and standing or being on your feet for approximately 80% of the shift. Prepare, log, and classify soil and rock samples according to standard systems and project requirements. Set up and prepare construction materials, including concrete, soils, and dirt, for testing by certified laboratory technicians. Assist lab technicians in performing physical tests on concrete and other construction materials. Conduct routine physical tests such as moisture content, limits testing, sieve analysis, and unconfined compressive strength under supervision. Compile and process test results, ensuring accuracy and completeness for use in technical reports by project engineers. Maintain detailed records of tests performed, sample identification, and test outcomes in accordance with established procedures. Calibrate testing equipment on a regular schedule and document all calibration activities in detailed logs. Perform routine maintenance on laboratory testing equipment to ensure proper operation and minimize downtime. Load and unload field trucks with materials and equipment, including lifting items up to 50 pounds. Follow all safety procedures while working in the lab and field, including proper handling of materials and equipment. Keep work areas organized and clean, recognizing that the lab environment involves dirt, dust, and construction materials. Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word. Attention to detail when preparing, logging, and classifying soil, rock, and concrete samples. Capability to assist in physical testing of concrete and other construction materials under the guidance of certified lab technicians. Willingness to work in a dirty and dusty lab environment involving construction materials. Entry-level to 2 years of experience in materials-related work preferred. Additional Skills & Qualifications Interest in pursuing laboratory certifications, with training support provided. Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate test records and calibration logs. Ability to learn and operate a variety of laboratory testing equipment. Effective communication skills to relay test results and observations to project engineers and lab staff. Motivation to develop a career in construction materials testing in both laboratory and field settings. Work Environment The position is based in an office building located in an industrial business park in Tempe. The facility is in an older building with low ceilings and relatively tight quarters, creating a compact and busy work setting. The role is primarily performed in a laboratory environment that involves frequent handling of construction materials such as concrete, soils, and dirt. As a result, the workspace is often dirty and dusty, and you should be comfortable working in a hands-on, industrial lab setting. The job requires significant time on your feet and regular lifting of materials and equipment, reflecting a physically demanding environment focused on practical, real-world testing of construction materials. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tempe, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
