Job Summary:
Collects, processes, and delivers specimens to lab departments while maintaining specimen integrity and within a prescribed time frame. Performs data entry and clerical duties to initiate and facilitate the processing of specimens.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required Associate's/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience:
Preferred Essential Functions:
Employs positive patient identification procedures to ensure the integrity of each specimen for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical testing. Performs proper specimen collection, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation (including centrifuge), transportation and storage. Responds accordingly to STAT, ASAP, routine and timed orders. Performs data entry and clerical duties to initiate and expedite the processing of specimens (enters patient information and orders tests). Communicates with other departments and staff, including physicians, to facilitate the flow and quality of lab work. Adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations. Prepares referral test specimens for pick up by courier, performs data entry of referral results and maintains referral filing system. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
