Overview:
As a Tech - Specimen, you will be integral to the specimen processing department, handling vital functions that ensure laboratory accuracy and efficiency. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong data entry background, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn about laboratory testing procedures. Whether you're starting your medical lab career or bringing experience from a production or clinical lab setting, this role offers an enriching environment where your efforts contribute to high-quality patient outcomes.
Responsibilities:
Perform general specimen support functions including presorting, pickup and delivery of processed specimens, centrifugation, aliquoting, and imaging/microfilming. Accurately enter and manage data, processing up to 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour, ensuring high levels of precision and efficiency. Understand and adhere to specimen types, test requirements, and compliance regulations, which may evolve daily. Maintain a neat, safe, and compliant work area, following all safety protocols including proper use of lab protective gear such as lab coats, masks, goggles, and gloves. Assist in specimen receipt, presort, and preparation workflows, ensuring timely and accurate specimen handling. Communicate effectively with team members and other departments to coordinate specimen processing tasks. Adapt to changing priorities and demands in a high-volume, production-focused environment, demonstrating flexibility and excellent organizational skills. Maintain safety standards in a biohazard environment, practicing good safety habits at all times. Support departmental productivity goals while upholding quality standards and compliance policies. Be available for various shifts, including night shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties based on staffing needs.
Required Skills:
Strong data entry skills with the ability to perform at least 6,000 keystrokes per hour Excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written Basic understanding of computers and data management systems Good organizational skills and the ability to learn quickly about specimen types and test procedures Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, repetitive task environment Strong attention to detail with an emphasis on accuracy and quality Effective communication skills suitable for interacting at all levels of staff Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks as needed Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for commuting to and from the worksite Nice to
Have Skills:
Prior laboratory experience, especially in specimen processing or clinical testing Knowledge of medical terminology relevant to clinical laboratories Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish to better serve diverse patient populations Experience working in a hospital laboratory or similar production environment
Preferred Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent Previous experience in a laboratory setting, production environment, or healthcare facility is a plus, but entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply with a strong desire to learn Medical background, including familiarity with medical terminology, is advantageous but not required
