A licensed Medical Laboratory Technician or a Medical Technologist must verify all results performed by a certification eligible Medical Laboratory Technician. This position is a temporary assignment for recently-graduated students from an approved school for Medical Laboratory Technicians, who are eligible for the national certification examinations such as the MLT(ASCP) from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). These candidates may be promoted to Medical Laboratory Technician (Certified) upon successfully attainment of certification and State licensure. Qualifications and Requirements Associate degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with successful completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including clinical training covering chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, microbiology, serology, phlebotomy, urinalysis and recordkeeping. The accreditation held by the program must be nationally recognized in clinical laboratory science, such as the National Agency on Accreditation for Clinical Laboratory Scientists (NAACLS) and allow the trainee to be eligible to take a national certification examination such as the MLT(ASCP) from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Must have applied or intend to apply for the Hawaii Clinical Laboratory Technician license.
