Job Title:
Laboratory Technician Job Description The Laboratory Technician supports scientific research by assisting technical personnel with general laboratory operations, routine experimental tasks, and information handling in both laboratory and greenhouse settings. Working under supervision, this role performs plant sampling, DNA extraction, high-throughput PCR, and inventory management according to established methods, standard operating procedures, and safety guidelines. Responsibilities Assist technical personnel with general laboratory operations and routine laboratory tasks in support of scientific research. Perform plant sampling in both laboratory and greenhouse environments following established protocols. Carry out DNA extraction procedures using accepted laboratory methods and training. Conduct high-throughput PCR experiments accurately and efficiently. Support laboratory inventory management, including tracking, organizing, and replenishing supplies and materials. Handle research data and information in an organized and accurate manner using basic computer programs. Follow prescribed methods, standard operating procedures, and work instructions for all laboratory activities. Adhere to Environmental Health and Safety standards and comply with all safety procedures. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a clean, safe work area. Document experimental procedures, observations, and results clearly and accurately. Communicate findings and updates effectively through written documentation and verbal discussions. Collaborate with team members and contribute to a cooperative and efficient research environment. Drive occasionally as needed for work-related activities, in accordance with organizational policies. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field strongly preferred; candidates actively working toward a BS in a science discipline with previous laboratory experience will be considered. Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience working in a research laboratory environment. Hands-on experience with DNA extraction techniques. Practical experience performing PCR, including high-throughput PCR. Familiarity with basic computer programs, including Microsoft Excel. Ability to understand and follow Environmental Health and Safety standards and safety procedures. Capability to follow standard operating procedures and detailed experimental protocols. Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting and communicating results. Good organizational skills with attention to detail in handling samples, reagents, and data. Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills for working effectively in a team environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience working in both laboratory and greenhouse settings. Background in chemistry, biology, or research and development environments. Demonstrated ability to manage laboratory inventory and maintain accurate records of supplies. Proven ability to adhere to safety protocols and consistently use appropriate PPE. Effective time management skills to handle multiple tasks in a structured research setting. Comfort with following guidance from supervision while working independently on assigned tasks. Work Environment This is a 100% site-based role with work performed in both laboratory and greenhouse settings. The position follows a Monday through Friday, first-shift schedule. The work environment involves routine use of standard laboratory equipment for DNA extraction and high-throughput PCR, as well as computer-based tasks using programs such as Microsoft Excel. Occasional driving may be required for work-related activities. The role requires consistent adherence to Environmental Health and Safety standards, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with all safety procedures in both the laboratory and greenhouse facilities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Johnston, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
