Soil Lab Technician Job Summary:

The Soil Lab Technician will perform a variety of laboratory tests on soil samples, following established procedures and protocols. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, a strong understanding of laboratory equipment, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. The Soil Lab Technician will be responsible for maintaining accurate records, ensuring equipment is calibrated, and assisting in the preparation of test reports.

Key Responsibilities:

Sample Preparation:

• Receive and log incoming soil samples.
• Prepare soil samples for testing, including drying, crushing, and sieving.
• Ensure proper labeling and storage of samples.

Laboratory Testing:

• Conduct a range of standard soil tests, including moisture content, grain size distribution, and Atterberg limits.
• Operate laboratory equipment such as sieves, ovens, and hydrometers.
• Perform proctor compaction tests and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests.

Quality Control:

• Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace.
• Perform routine equipment calibration and maintenance.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols.

Data Analysis:

• Record test results accurately and maintain detailed records.
• Assist in the analysis and interpretation of test data.
• Prepare preliminary reports and assist in the preparation of final test reports.

Team Collaboration:

• Collaborate with engineers and project managers to prioritize and complete testing assignments.
• Communicate effectively with team members to ensure the timely delivery of results.

Qualifications:

Previous experience in a geotechnical or construction materials testing laboratory is a plus. Knowledge of laboratory soil testing methods and equipment. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Comfortable working in a laboratory environment with exposure to soil and construction materials.
