A Medical Laboratory Technician helps with the performance of laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories, which provide information for medical patient diagnosis and treatment. Sets up, operates, and maintains laboratory equipment, makes observations, and calculates and records results; receives, types, tests, and records blood bank inventories.
The Medical Technologist (MT) / Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to standard operating procedures, and a commitment to quality and accuracy in testing.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Testing:
Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests in areas such as chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and blood bank. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring it is calibrated and functioning correctly.
Quality Control:
Conduct quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. Troubleshoot and resolve any discrepancies or issues with testing procedures or results.
Specimen Handling:
Collect, process, and analyze biological specimens, ensuring proper identification and handling. Maintain accurate records of specimens, tests performed, and results obtained.
Documentation and Reporting:
Document test results accurately and timely, entering data into the laboratory information system (LIS). Prepare and deliver reports to physicians and other healthcare providers, ensuring they have the information needed for patient care.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper disposal of hazardous materials. Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards, including CLIA, CAP, and OSHA requirements.
Continuous Improvement:
Participate in continuing education and training to stay current with advances in laboratory techniques and technologies. Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency and accuracy.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work collaboratively with other laboratory staff, healthcare providers, and support personnel to ensure optimal patient care. Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments as needed.
Qualifications:
Education:
Medical Technologist:
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
Medical Laboratory Technician:
Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field.
Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP or equivalent.
Medical Laboratory Technician:
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by ASCP or equivalent.
