Job Overview The Laboratory Technician I is responsible for supporting daily laboratory operations by performing routine sample preparation, extraction, testing, documentation, and general laboratory maintenance. This position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate, reliable, and timely analytical results while maintaining compliance with laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality standards, and safety regulations. The Laboratory Technician I works under the guidance of senior laboratory personnel and contributes to the efficient operation of the laboratory. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Sample Preparation & Processing Receive, log, label, and document incoming samples according to laboratory SOPs. Prepare cannabis samples for analysis through homogenization, weighing, extraction, dilution, and other required preparation techniques. Maintain sample traceability and chain of custody throughout the testing process. Ensure proper storage and handling of samples before and after analysis. Laboratory Testing & Extraction Techniques Perform routine laboratory procedures using established analytical methods and SOPs. Execute sample extraction procedures for cannabinoid, terpene, pesticide, residual solvent, heavy metal, and microbial analyses as assigned. Prepare reagents, standards, calibration solutions, quality control samples, and controls according to laboratory protocols.

Utilize extraction techniques including:

Solvent extraction Sample dilution and filtration Homogenization techniques Support instrument preparation and sample loading for analytical platforms Laboratory Operations Operate laboratory equipment following training and established procedures. Perform routine maintenance, calibration checks, and cleaning of laboratory instruments and equipment. Maintain accurate laboratory records, notebooks, electronic laboratory systems, and data entries. Report testing observations, deviations, equipment issues, or quality concerns to senior laboratory staff or the Laboratory Manager. Quality Assurance & Compliance Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance requirements. Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization. Assist with inventory management, stocking laboratory supplies, and monitoring reagent expiration dates. Follow all health and safety procedures, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials. Maintain compliance with applicable state regulations governing cannabis testing laboratories. QualificationsEducation High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in Chemistry, Biology, Laboratory Science, or a related scientific discipline preferred. Experience Previous laboratory experience, internship, or coursework in chemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related field preferred but not required. Experience in analytical laboratory environments or cannabis testing laboratories is a plus. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate results. Ability to follow written procedures, SOPs, and laboratory protocols. Basic understanding of laboratory safety practices and chemical handling. Strong organizational and time management skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and basic laboratory information management systems (LIMS) preferred. Willingness to learn laboratory instrumentation and analytical techniques. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Manual dexterity sufficient to handle laboratory equipment and small instruments. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, lab coat, and safety glasses. Ability to work safely around laboratory chemicals and instrumentation. Working Conditions Laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals, solvents, cannabis samples, and laboratory equipment. Frequent use of laboratory instruments and computer systems. Compliance with all laboratory safety procedures and PPE requirements is mandatory.
