Full Job Description Summary of Position:

The Lab Technician supports both new product development (R D) and quality control (QC) activities at SmartSolve, ensuring that materials meet performance, regulatory, and customer requirements from concept through production. This role is responsible for executing laboratory testing, supporting formulation trials, and performing in-process and release quality checks. The Lab Technician operates at the intersection of innovation and manufacturing — translating experimental findings into standardized test methods and ensuring consistent product quality through disciplined data collection, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and adherence to ISO 9001 and

FSSC 22000

requirements.

Essential Duties:

• Execute bench-scale formulation and processing trials for new resin and polymer materials, including optimization of pressure-sensitive adhesives and biopolymer formulations.
• Execute standardized CTQ and mechanical performance tests (ASTM

D1876, ASTM D6195, ASTM E96, TAPPI 411, TAPPI 410

) with full data accuracy, repeatability, and GLP documentation.

• Produce formal study reports that include narrative context, data, sample images, and actionable conclusions — in cross-functional, report-ready format.
• Troubleshoot material failures and processing anomalies — proposing root-cause hypotheses, designing targeted experiments, and documenting both failed and successful pathways.
• Maintain work-in-progress visibility in shared systems, updated at minimum weekly with current status and next action.
• Author and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new and existing equipment and test methods, written to a level of detail that allows independent execution by a new team member.
• Support production quality inspection — identifying specification deviations in real time and bridging R D findings to actionable quality criteria for the production team.
• Assist in the development and implementation of quality control protocols, including calibrating lab equipment and following safety protocols.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong quantitative data analysis skills — ability to extract meaningful conclusions from multi-parameter test datasets.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply ASTM and TAPPI test standards independently.
• Demonstrated independence in troubleshooting: ability to diagnose problems, propose hypotheses, and iterate without constant escalation.
• Equipment aptitude — learns new lab instruments quickly and safely; contributes to SOP creation, not just execution.

Training and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Systems Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Graduate-level candidates (MS, PhD in progress or completed) strongly preferred 1-3 years lab or QC experience. Experience with

ASTM/TAPPI

preferred. Exposure to ISO 9001 or

FSSC 22000

is a plus

Preferred Skills:

• Basic understanding of compostability and biodegradability concepts and testing methods (coursework or lab experience preferred).
• Exposure to biopolymer coatings development or similar laboratory projects.
• Familiarity with regulatory standards and certifications for biopolymers (gained through coursework or internships).
• Experience designing and executing multi-phase material test programs from scoping through final report. Proficiency in AI-assisted research and reporting tools is a plus.
• Demonstrated SOP authorship or technical documentation experience.
• Exposure to ISO 9001 or

FSSC 22000

quality management systems.

$21.00 - $24.00 per hour
