Overview:
As a Specimen Processing Technician, you will support the daily operations of a busy specimen processing department within a leading medical center. This position offers the opportunity to develop your skills in laboratory specimen handling, data entry, and compliance with safety regulations, all while working in a collaborative and engaging environment. Responsibilities:
Perform general specimen support functions including accessioning, presorting, centrifugation, aliquoting, and specimen pickup/delivery within the laboratory setting. Accurately enter patient data and specimen information into laboratory systems, maintaining a productivity rate of approximately 6,000 keystrokes per hour. Ensure specimens are processed in accordance with test requirements, understanding different specimen types and testing protocols. Maintain compliance with safety, biohazard, and laboratory regulations, practicing good safety habits and proper biohazard handling. Keep work areas organized, clean, and in compliance with departmental standards. Communicate effectively with team members and other departments, adapting to changing priorities and daily regulatory updates. Support imaging or microfilming tasks as needed and participate in additional specimen processing duties to meet departmental goals. Work primarily on the night shift, with flexibility for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime based on staffing needs. Demonstrate a commitment to quality, productivity, and excellent customer service to ensure patient test results are delivered accurately and promptly.
Required Skills:
High school diploma or equivalent. Basic understanding of computers and data entry procedures. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work efficiently in a biohazard environment while following safety protocols. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective team interaction. Prior experience in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting. Knowledge of laboratory terminology, specimen types, and testing protocols. Experience in a production environment or manufacturing with emphasis on quality and productivity standards. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) or related software.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience is a plus, but not required. Background in healthcare or medical terminology enhances candidate readiness.

Flexibility to work night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Ability to handle biohazard materials safely and maintain strict adherence to safety policies.
