Wednesday- Saturday 7:30 PM TO 6:00 AM
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) participates in all Product Quality Control (PQC) department activities. The MLT performs testing and services related to product manufacturing, quality control, laboratory support, and customer service within the scope and complexity defined by applicable accrediting agencies. This position also participates in required competency, proficiency, and continuing education activities, as well as departmental training, mentoring, and educational initiatives (e.g., laboratory tours, presentations), as applicable. Through these responsibilities, the MLT helps ensure PQC laboratory operations consistently meet regulatory and organizational standards, deliver high-quality service, and support the needs of both internal and external customers. The MLT exemplifies and champions Carter BloodCare (CBC) Core Values and Code of Conduct, and adheres to CBC policies and applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To support ongoing development and organizational goals, the MLT is required to attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned. The MLT maintains active, current professional licensure and/or certifications as required by role-specific regulations and organizational requirements. This position may require working varied shifts, extended hours, weekends, and/or overtime to support operational needs. Regular full-time attendance is required during normal working hours. QualificationsEDUCATION
Associate's Degree in a Chemical, Biological, Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from an accredited institution, as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1423(b), or equivalent education and training, including at least 60 semester hours or the equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either: 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory Technology courses; or, 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of Chemistry; and, 6 semester hours of Biology; and, 12 more semester hours of Chemistry, Biology, or Medical Laboratory Technology in any combination; High school graduate or GED equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least a duration of 50 weeks and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist/Laboratory Technician; or, Laboratory training that includes either of the following: Completion of a Clinical Laboratory Training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organizations approved by HHS. This training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above: or, Minimum of at least 3 months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs moderate complexity testing per CLIA (e.g., hematology, microbiology) Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)Board Certification:
MLT(ASCP) or equivalent Board Certification and participation in the CME program, if applicable and required by the accrediting agency; or, Recent graduate from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program within the last 5 years and is currentlyBoard-eligible NOTE:
Must successfully obtain and maintain Board Certification (e.g., MLT(ASCP) or equivalent) and provide Board Certification documentation to the CBC Human Resources Department within 12 months of the hire date.EXPERIENCE
Prior clinical laboratory experience, including rotations via an accredited MLT program Previous general or blood center laboratory experience, including rotation via an accredited MLT program, preferredSKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Maintains a strong working knowledge of moderate complexity testing and instrumentation utilized in the PQC department, and working knowledge of the parameters associated with donor collections Ability to utilize detailed problem-solving skills; Ability to provide instruction to others based on the problems presented, and provide options for corrective action and proper documentation of the problem and resolution Ability to concentrate and understand moderate to complex problems and collaborate and explore alternative solutions; Ability to organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology Ability to understand, remember, communicate and apply verbal and/or written instructions or other information; Ability to understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines Ability to perform and utilize extensive mathematics, including familiarity with laboratory mathematics and computers; Ability to compute, analyze and interpret numerical data for reporting purposes Ability to utilize effective organizational skills, prioritize workload, pay attention to detail and show consistent follow-through, with a commitment to excellence Ability to communicate, hear, and speak effectively on the phone and to use a computer or other electronic devices Ability to communicate and interact effectively with others (e.g., internal/external clients, co-workers) in a clear, understandable, and professional manner (e.g., verbal, written), and possess comprehensive reading skills Ability to effectively communicate verbally, conveying information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner to a variety of audiences Ability to make decisions which have a significant impact on the department's credibility, operations and services Demonstrates exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, building effective relationships with internal and external customers while fostering openness, trust, and collaboration Maintains a clear understanding of all associated accreditation and regulatory agency requirementsPHYSICAL/MENTAL STRESS FACTORS
Stress associated with exposure to potential biohazard areas, materials, blood, body fluids, chemicals and cleaning solutions (OSHA Job Category I) Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time Ability to perform repetitive motion (e.g., typing, stripping of tubing, pipetting) Ability to detect varying degrees of hemolysis and distinguish the difference between colors and shades of colors Mental stress due to high customer service demands and working with strict deadlines; Ability to exchange and document accurate information and perform testing under these high-stress and emergent conditions Ability to multitask effectively; Ability to establish appropriate priorities, to recognize and do what needs to be done without direction, and to meet departmental and inventory needs; Ensure work is completed efficiently and supports teamwork and cooperation with coworkers and peers Occasionally moves supplies weighing up to 40 pounds (with assistance, if needed) Stress associated with working overtime, holidays and being On Call/Call Back, as needed Stress associated with an overnight stay in a location provided by CBC during inclement weather and/or disaster situations, as deemed necessary by the PQC Management team Carter BloodCare is an EEO/Affirmative Action employer.
