Job Description

Job Summary The Specimen Accessioner performs clinical specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry within a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory setting, following established standard operating procedures. Position hours are 10am-6pm, Monday-Friday. Primary Job Duties 1. Accession specimen requisitions, slides, or blocks received from clients. 2. Accurately and promptly enter patient information into the laboratory information system (LIS). 3. Identify, resolve, and document specimen issues as they arise. 4. Recognize inconsistencies or errors on requisitions and coordinate with client offices to correct the information. 5. Enter dictated gross descriptions of specimens into the laboratory's LIS. 6. Answer telephones and perform a variety of administrative tasks. 7. Communicate with client offices in a professional and courteous manner. 8. Assist with unpacking specimens and routing them to the appropriate area, as needed. 9. Perform other administrative duties as assigned. Education High School degree; Successful completion of an accredited business school program that included coursework in medical terminology. Experience One (1) or more years of experience in a healthcare environment. Qualified candidates must have a typing speed of 60+ words per minute. Additional Job Standards 1. Ability to interact positively with pathologists and laboratory personnel. 2. Outstanding oral communication skills with clients and physicians. 3. Solid data entry and organizational skills; ability to type 60 WPM. 4. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with others. 5. Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately identify specimens. 6. Comfortable handling biological specimens. 7. Able to lift up to 20 lbs. Special Skills / Knowledge Requirements 1. Ability to learn and apply computer software applications. 2. Demonstrated problem-resolution skills within day-to-day operations. 3. Ability to work independently as well as with others. 4. Ability to accurately relay information. 5. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient test results and conditions. 6. Maintain a positive image of the laboratory. 7. Present appearance in accordance with laboratory dress code. 8. Ability to work in a role that involves continual sitting and standing for long periods.
Pay:
$18.50 - $19.75 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
