POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Laboratory Specialist to join our Sample Support Services team. This position will perform pre-analytical laboratory functions, including the accurate accessioning of high volumes of clinical and/or environmental samples, reviewing documentation, and ensuring proper chain of custody procedures are followed. The Laboratory Specialist will work closely with internal and external customers, respond to inquiries, investigate and resolve discrepancies, reject samples when necessary, and provide technical guidance and training. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent communication and customer service skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks while following established laboratory procedures and safety protocols. This position is expected to last 3-6 months.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform accurate accessioning and other pre-analytical laboratory functions. Review samples and documentation for accuracy and identify discrepancies. Reject samples when necessary according to established procedures. Maintain accurate laboratory records and chain of custody documentation. Respond to customer inquiries and assist with resolving issues. Provide technical guidance and training to staff. Communicate effectively with internal and external customers. Follow laboratory safety procedures when handling chemical, microbiological, infectious, and toxic materials. Prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines. Lift and transport materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
Qualifications & Skills:
Knowledge of general laboratory terminology, procedures, and basic mathematics. Experience accessioning high volumes of clinical and/or environmental samples. Experience with laboratory documentation and chain of custody procedures. Strong attention to detail and ability to identify errors. Ability to follow established procedures and prioritize work effectively. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong customer service, problem-solving, and investigative skills. Ability to safely lift and transport up to 30 pounds.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times. Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
