The Opportunity:
As the Laboratory Technician 1, you will play a key role in the Sample Receiving section of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL), where you will support daily laboratory operations under general supervision. You will perform routine laboratory procedures as well as simple, qualitative laboratory work. In this role, you will triage, examine, evaluate, prepare, and route samples for testing, enter data into the Laboratory Information Management System, and operate and maintain laboratory equipment. You will interact regularly with WADDL clients, faculty, residents, and laboratory personnel while providing exceptional customer service. To be successful, you will bring familiarity with basic laboratory practices, equipment, and aseptic techniques, along with eligibility and understanding of BSL‑2 laboratory safety guidelines and work environments.
Additional Information:
This is a full time (100 % FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible .
Monthly Salary:
$3,925 to $5,271 | Range 44 | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with
WAC 357-28
. In accordance with
RCW 49.58.110
, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of a course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologtists for laboratory assistants OR two years of chemical, or clinical or public health laboratory experience. Training in medical technology or education in college with courses in laboratory sciences may be substituted, year for year, for experience. Physical eligibility required for working in a BioSafety Lab-2 (BSL-2) environment. Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using COFL or similar laboratory information management or electronic medical record system Experience handling biological specimens. Exceptional data entry skills, demonstrating speed and accuracy. Experience in a medical, healthcare, and/or veterinary laboratory setting Experience providing exceptional customer service Experience/Familiarity with Hand-Off Communication Standards Strong interpersonal skills and ability to respond constructively to stressful situations and problems.

The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) supports Washington's testing for early disease detection, protecting public health, food security, and the state's $1.5 billion animal agriculture industry.
